“Protocol”
by Commander Skyler
& Commander Javan Sierra
Skyler had just finished with her conversation with Captain Ketchum. She sat down and was rubbing her temples trying to make this damnable headache go away. She really didn't want to deal with Cazook any sooner than she needed but it appeared after this conversation that sooner was going to be better.
Javan's rides in the turbolift were one of his few precious moments away from everything. Just a blissful oasis of pure thought and completely silence. When the lift shuddered to a standstill he knew that the oasis was going to be turned into a chaos that wasn't tameable. He tugged at his uniform and then waltzed onto the bridge. He crossed to the ready room behind Skyler and walked into it. "Aw, hell."
Skyler thought she heard a voice and got up to see who it was. She made her way to the ready room where she noticed Cmdr Sierra. "Welcome to my hell, Commander."
He nodded absently. "Suspects?"
She looked at him in dismay. "Just everyone on the ship."
Mentally noting Skyler's remarks, his eyes went to observation mode. Walking into the room he looked at the markings that Forensics had made - she was thorough, that much was blatantly obvious. "Time of death?"
"When I found him, he had been dead at least a few hours. So my best guess is by now is that he has been dead for at least four to six hours. All protocols have been followed, including confining the Rydyn delegates to their quarters. Fleet Captain Ketchum will be arriving in approximately six hours." She could see he was not going to be overly cooperative.
With mind racing, he looked at the markings on the desks surface. After staring at the footprints for a couple of minutes he moved back to the desk. "Cause of death?" The room had an eerie feel about it. Something as somber as death - though he'd seen it countless times before - still managed to taint an area.
Why was there always added tension between them whenever they had to work together? "Commander, Ensign Redgrave from forensics has done a complete exam of the area. She is currently running any and all test's possible. There were plasma discharge burns on his chest. The autopsy will be done by both Forensics and the Medical department. What I need from you is to secure this area as well as the delegates and begin an investigation in cooperation with Ensigns Daros and Redgrave."
Trying to not drip with contempt, Javan turned and looked at the Commander, "I'm well aware of my responsibilities as Chief Security Officer, Commander, and I'm also informed as to the situation and dealings with Forensics. What I need from you is a little less attitude and a little more information."
"I would not have to give you attitude if you had responded to my call instead of taking your time getting here. What you are calling attitude is frustration. If you know your job as Chief of Security then you should've been here before now. I don't just call people ASAP for the fun of it. I have given you all the information I have, now if there is nothing else I need to return to the bridge."
"I responded as fast as I could, Commander, unlike you I don't sit in a chair all day staring a screen full of stars," Javan tried to quiet his inner anger, but it was festering with the situation, "if I didn't get here to your convenience then I suggest you take it up with the Captain. Oh, wait, he's dead. So, you'll have to deal with it for now. As for the delegates, I'll take care of the situation there. The scene has been properly secured, I'm mildly surprised. As for the investigation, I'll make a full report to Ketchum when he arrives."
Skyler was steaming now. "How dare you accuse me of sitting and staring at stars. You won't have to worry about making a full report to Ketchum when he arrives, he already knows more than you think. I suggest you just get to work on the investigation before someone else turns up dead on your watch."
"Last time I checked, Commander, you were on shift when this happened. Seeing as how you're the superior officer I would suggest I get to work so someone else doesn't die on YOUR watch." He moved passed her and out onto the bridge, "and, regardless of Ketchum's information, I'll make a report to him. That's Starfleet protocol, maybe you should brush up."
She was fed up with his holier than thou attitude and wasn't going to step to his level and get in an argument with him. Let him think he was the know it all. Ketchum would realize the truth in the end. She just wanted to get as far away from him as possible. She just let him leave and she returned to the bridge and her duties as Acting Captain until Ketchum arrived. That was protocol.
