<USS Avalon> "Post-Op Reports"

"Post-Op Reports"
Dr. Georgia Lewis & Lieutenant Raven Xavier

Georgia didn't know how long she had been in surgery as she stretched
her neck muscles. Looking down she also didn't realize how much blood she was
covered in. The injuries were more extensive than she first thought. She had
done all she could, now it was up to the patients. They were young and strong
so the outlook was good.

"Make sure you check their vitals every 10 minutes for the first hour
and then go to every 15. I want to be notified if there are any problems
whatsoever.' The nurses all nodded at her orders. She had to admit it felt
strange
being the one giving the orders instead of following them. She walked over
to the sink and cleaned herself up, threw away her gown and got a quick drink
of water. She had a feeling there was going to be a contingent of people in
the waiting room ready to jump her as she walked out.Taking a deep breath she
did just that. She walked out into the waiting room and looked around to see
who was in charge. "Who is in charge here?"

Raven Xavier approached quickly. "I guess that would be me, since the
only other two left standing are Ensigns. What's the word, Doc?" She was
especially worried about Dr. Lincoln, with his shoulder half torn off, and
Mac,
with those horrible deep gashes across his abdomen and the vitals so low he
was
only barely still with them by the time they got him here, but she couldn't
say that out loud. They're all your crew mates, she reminded herself. It was
your job, as security chief, to protect them all.

Georgia looked at the woman in front of her. "Just who are you before I
start giving out information?" She wasn't one to give out info to just anyone.

"I'm sorry, Dr. Lewis. Guess I should have reintroduced myself, since
it's been awhile. Lieutenant Raven Xavier, Security Chief of the Resurgence."
Sighing, stamping down any emotions that might come with that announcement as
quickly they surfaced, she added wryly. "Those people you've been working
on...they're my shipmates...my family." She looked away quickly, swallowing
the
urge to cry or scream. "Please...can you just let me know if they're going to
make it? You don't have to say anything more than that. I just...I need to
know. Please?"

It had indeed been awhile since she had heard Raven's name. "Well,
Lieutenant, it was touch and go for awhile but they are strong. I was able to
stop the bleeding and in time we were able to repair Dr. Lincoln's arm." She
walked over and put her arm around the security officer. "It's alright to let
your emotions show. Sometimes it is what a body needs. To hold them in will
only cause you some kind of physical manifestation."

Rae almost lost it at that. How long had it been since anyone but Mac
had put their arms around her for a purpose other than getting into her pants?
She couldn't even remember. Tears began to fall unbidden. "I...thanks, Doc."
Drawing a quivering breath, she asked the question she most feared the answer
to. "What about Mac? We almost lost him on the surface. His injuries...they
were so bad...the Major didn't seem sure he'd survive the transport?" She
looked at Doctor Lewis pleadingly. "He's going to pull through too, isn't he?
I
mean...you were able to do something. Weren't you?" She noticed Tran and
Fielding coming closer, stopping just far enough to give her some semblance of
'privacy' but still near enough to try to hear the answer.

Georgia remembered how stubborn McEntire could be. "Don't worry Chief,
Mac is going to be fine. Granted his wounds were serious but he is strong and
is fighting back as we speak. I have someone watching him every minute and if
there are any changes they will let me know. I may have been a nurse once
upon a time, but now I think I am a damn good doctor. Not that I am tooting my
own horn." She knew that everyone's eyes would be on her and her work. She
wasn't about to let anyone down.

Rae grinned at that, "You were a damn fine, if stubborn nurse, as I
recall. Nothing and nobody got past you. Including me," she almost laughed
through her tears at that. "I don't doubt he's in the best possible hands."
Giving
Lewis a light squeeze before straighten up and clearing her throat, trying
hard to pull herself together ,she added. "thanks, Doc."

"So, Doc...um...you think..." Tran began tentatively. "maybe we
could..you know...see them for ourselves, soon? Maybe?" It wasn't that he
doubted the
doctor. He didn't. He just wasn't sure he could sleep anytime soon without
nightmares until he saw for himself that the nightmare they'd just lived
through really was over.

Georgia could see in the look of concern in their eyes. She had her
reservations about letting anyone in to see the patients but, she also knew
that
she would have more in the future if they didn't get to see their friends.
"Well, its against my better judgement but I will allow you to have 5 minutes
to see them. But there are a few rules. You are not to touch or disturb them
in anyway. They need all the rest they can get. You will talk softly if you
need to talk at all. And when I say it is time to go there will be no arguing.
Have I made myself clear?"

"Yes, ma'am," They all chorused at once. "thank you, ma'am," Tran added
gratefully. "I won't disturb them. I just need to see they're okay."
Fielding nodded his agreement, content to let the others speak for him.
"thanks,
Doc," Rae whispered quietly.

Sighing Georgia smiled, "Alright then follow me." She led the
emotionally wounded into the harsh bright lights of sickbay. She led them to
Mac's bed
and moved to the side so they could have a better view. While they were
checking him out she was checking out his vitals which appeared to be
stable.(go)

Tran checked his vitals out of habit while Rae stepped closer to the
bed. Fielding looked at him and frowned at how still and pale he looked. He
looked distractedly at the IV's and tubes. "How long is he gonna need all
that,"
he whispered to the doctor, gesturing toward all the stuff.

"Well, to be honest he is gonna need it for as long as he needs it. I
can't give you an exact estimate and I would be wrong to try. He is getting
his
med's and nourishment through those tubes and "stuff". As he gets stronger I
will be able to wean him and the others off of it." She knew they were
concerned so she didn't object to their questions.

Fielding blanched a little but nodded. "okay," he whispered, trying to
reconcile the fragile looking blonde on the bed with the LC who'd carried half
the injured to the cave on his own back only days earlier. "Okay."
Rae reached out to touch his hand, then remembered the admonition and pulled
her hand back. "Get back on your feet soon," she whispered, then quipped
halfheartedly, "No way I'm doing all the reports myself."

Tran reached out and touched her shoulder. "We should go and let him
rest," he whispered seriously, his eyes still on the bio bed readouts overhead.

(ok)

Georgia discreetly nodded to a nurse who quietly stood behind the young
ensign. She didn't need anyone passing out in her sickbay. Not now anyway.
"Don't worry I will keep you posted as to their condition. I also have to
inform Captain Skyler as well." She had a feeling she was going to regret
saying
this but she knew they needed to hear it. "If you wake up and need to know
what's going on feel free to call me. I will do my best to keep you informed."

"Thanks, Doctor," Tran replied, knowing he likely would. He noticed how
pale Fielding had become and stepped over to support his friend, nodding
slightly to the nurse who seemed to be standing by for that purpose as well.
"Come on, Matt. Let's go." he said. To Rae, he added, "We'll wait for you in
the
hall, if you want." Rae just nodded absently, her eyes till on Mac. After a
moment, she replied. "Um..yeah...I'll be right there."

Georgia looked at Rae, "Is there something I can do for you Chief?"

Swallowing hard, a tear escaped as she shook her head. Wiping it away
quickly, she whispered thickly. "No. I'm good, thanks." Resisting the urge to
kiss his cheek, she whispered to him, "You're in good hands now, Patrick.
You'll be okay."

Putting her arm around Rae, Georgia pulled her into a hug. "He is going
to be fine. Don't you worry he will be fine. I promise you." She held the
young woman as she started to sob quietly.

Rae stayed there a moment, allowing the pain and anger and frustration
and helplessness of the last several days to wash over her, then drew herself
back, her blue skin tinged slightly with embarrassment. "Not much of an
example of strength to the troops now, am I." she laughed, quoting her last
performance review aboard Avalon B, the one that had garnered her the
promotion to
Chief aboard the Resurgence, ironically. "Don't tell Skyler, okay? I'd rather
she still thought a little higher of me than this."

"You have reason to be upset. These are your friends, your family and
your crew mates. As for Skyler I don't think she would think less of you for
caring about your friends. And neither do I."

Rae smiled. "Thanks, Doctor Lewis. It's easy to see why the commander
spoke the way she did about you." Giving her another self conscious squeeze,
and casting one last glance at her friend, she exited the room.
