Physicality
by Dr. El-Kainah Ngaio and Ensign Mary O'Donnell
Having been allotted some quarters, Mary felt relieved to dump her bag
somewhere and regain her composure. How did I allow him to do that to me?
Deciding to postpone checking in with her direct superior, she made the
decision to get her physical out the way.
---------------------------------
When she entered, there appeared to be no-one around. Not wanting to get caught
snooping, Mary remained in the main room. The muted sounds of her surroundings,
began to play on her mind. Its too quiet, I don't like it. Moving to the other
door, "Anybody there? Who does a girl have to shoot to get a physical round
here?"
El was working his first alpha shift since he had spoken to Lieutenant Jameson
just a couple of days previous. It had been a strange morning. He had gotten up
early and had met Miri for breakfast, just something light this time. It was
barely mid-morning ships time and he had already dealt with several
cantankerous souls who had wanted test results and a request from at least
three department heads who had complained that there had been fertility
medication added to the replicators on their decks. "Why else would so many
females aboard be pregnant at once?" the department heads surmised.
The voice coming from the main medical bay to his office, had startled him some
what but he rose to go discover who it was that was being so impatient and why
a nurse hadn't seen her yet. El-Kainah Ngaio, came out his braids clicking
against one another as he walked and his black hair shining under the bright
lights of the Main Bay. His dark skin was smooth and clean looking in the harsh
light. He wasn't used to working by Alpha shift lighting, he rather enjoyed the
cozier atmosphere of nightwatch lighting.
"Hopefully you don't need to shoot anyone, Ma'am," El said as he emerged and
spotted the young woman there. "May I help you, Ensign? I am Doctor Ngaio," he
informed her as he took in her features.
Appraising the dark haired, dark skinned man before her, Mary chewed her bottom
lip. More surprises! He can't be a doctor? He's my age. When'd he start medical
school, Fourteen? Shaking her head, "I'm looking for a doctor to conduct my
physical. You trying to tell me that's what you are?" Allowing an O'Donnell
smile to air, "I mean you're too young, and anyway don't doc's come out the
Academy as Lieutenants?"
El half chuckled. "Well, I am a quick study. And I was sent here to complete my
residency," he told her. "You going to be ok with me conducting your physical?"
he asked sensing her discomfort.
He watched her for a reaction.
Mary felt the slight heat across her nose.Hell what is it with this ship and
showing my freckles! "I guess so. What you lack in experience, you'll make up
for in enthusiasm."
El smiled. "Well go ahead and get yourself settled on Biobed 2. I'll join you
there shortly." He indicated the direction she should go and he went to get the
items he would need to conduct her entry physical. It didn't take him long
particularly, to gather the few items he would need.
Once he rejoined Ensign O'Donnell, he tried to put her at ease. "Just relax,
Ensign. We'll have you back to your duties in no time," he said as he pulled
out the scanner. His scanner showed him what he alread had suspected, that this
human female was perfectly healthy. "You're initial scan in negative, Ensign."
He looked at her a moment his dark eyes taking her in. "I'll need to take a
couple of viles of blood for a series of tests, and there is the standard
fitness tests, as well," he added. "But I am sure those will be no problem
either."
He went about getting a hypo to take the blood and as he came back to her he
spoke again. "I'll need you to roll up your sleeve, please," he asked her
gently.
She smiled again, "I must say, you've got a cracking bedside manner."
He waited for her to comply patiently and asked, "So what brings you to the
Avalon, Ensign? I can see you are in Security. Did you ask for this
assignment?" he asked as he pressed the hypo into her bared arm.
The smile vanished, her jade eyes flashed in warning. "No doctor, I did not
ask, and neither have I been told." Her tone turned hard. " When I find out
who's responsible their life will become a living hell. Until a few hours ago I
was attached to the UFP Consulate staff on Betazed." She felt her temper flare,
and the biobed readings rose with her blood pressure. " I had six months to
serve, and two weeks leave booked. I have lost those and what I was going to do
during them. I know nothing about this ship or its crew." Her voice was almost
a whisper. " I do not like going into a situation blind. Someone is keeping me,
and others in the dark. And as a Security officer that sounds alarms on many
levels."
"My apologies, Ensign, I didn't mean to bring up a sore subject," he removed
one vial from the bottom of the hypo, and placed the second one in. He gave her
a smile adding, "almost done." He watched the second vial fill up. "What was so
interesting on Betazed?" he asked hoping he wasn't intruding too much by
asking.
"Nothing as such. I was going home, to Earth. My sister Moira graduates the
Academy next month. She's been training as a navigator for Space Superiority
Fighters. I'm so proud of her. It just hurts that I won't be there, thats all."
"I'm sorry you're going to miss her graduation," he told her. "I know I'd be
upset too if I missed my sister's graduation." She was starting to get fidgety
as she was being examined the rest of the way. He smiled slightly. "We'll have
you out of here in a few moments Ensign," he told her. "Just the fitness test
left, I can do the blood work after you leave. I'll send you a note with the
results," he went on.
The physical fitness test was exactly that. Physical and a test of her fitness.
She was a security officer so she did well enough. Most officers did in fact.
Her lung capacity was excellent and her recovery time was good as well. He
smiled at her as she stood sweating before him. "All finished Ensign," he said.
"You did fine. Nothing that will keep you on restricted duty or anything," he
told her.
He handed her a towel so she could dry off a bit before she left. "Welcome
aboard Ensign. And feel free to come see me again if you start having any
problems. Make sure you concentrate on eating protein for a few days. You need
to help your body replace the blood we took," he reminded her.
"Thanks, doc. Sorry I bit your head off back then." Tossing him the towel she
made for the door. "Don't worry about me though, I can take care of myself."
