On Reflection
by Ensign Mary O'Donnell
Sitting a junction of Jefferies tubes, Mary had her head in her hands.
The trip from NoWhere had been made in silence. She felt that the Lieutenant
saw her as beneath him for some reason, and that made her even more angry. So
once they'd left the 'lift she'd decided to go in search of the invaders.
Prudence had dictated avoiding turbolifts. Unfortunately she had no clear idea
where she was going.
After descending three decks her anger had subsided and she'd curled her
herself into a ball and sobbed. Great way to end your career, bawl out the
Captain.
Why had she done it? Frustration that no-one seemed to able to give her a
reasonable answer for why she was here. There were too many secrets on this
ship and they seemed to get in the way her doing her job properly. Admittedly
her claustrophobia and being in a room with no visible way out couldn't have
helped.
The fact the Captain had scuttled off to hide. Though the more she thought
about this, things started to make more sense. Cadet Forrester had said
something about the wormhole being temporal, the future technology the boarders
had, the fact the captain had shut off both main viewscreens. There was
something out there the crew was not meant to see, maybe even from their own
possible futures? And obviously a Captain could cause far more damage than
anyone else in this situations.
She slammed her fist into the bulkhead. So why didn't he just say it was to
prevent contamination of timelines? Hell's bells, they were given a short
course on Temporal Dynamics and Disruptions now at the Academy by a member of
the Department of Temporal Investigations.
"I would have understood!" She bellowed into the confined space, slamming her
fist into the bulkhead again.
'Channel that anger Mary, turn it to a positive.'
"I didn't ask you Moy!"
But she picked herself up anyway, shouldering her rifle and began to move back
towards the corridors. Time to kick arse, O'Donnell.
