Nights Of A Child

Sitting up in bed, back leaning against the head board and knees bent, a PADD 
resting on them, Caine rubbed her eyes and stared down at the PADD.  Already 
she had met with half the crew but she still had many more to meet with.  
Sometimes she felt like her job was so tedious, at least now she had someone to 
help her out, even if Garrett didn?t have the proper training to counsel, he 
could at least pick up the paper work.  

Caine wondered about him, not for the second time since the meeting.  He was 
interesting, seemed different from some of the other men on the ship, yet the 
same as all of the men.  He was cocky, self assured and in quite a few ways he 
reminded her of Javan.  Thinking of Javan brought a small frown to Caine?s 
face; she hadn?t seen him in a while and really hadn?t had much time to talk to 
him, what with both of the prepping for the new mission and Caine still dealing 
with the effects of the last mission.

A cry interrupted, what could have been, very dark thoughts.  Jumping out of 
bed, she followed the sounds of the crying into the living and to Hannah?s 
partly closed bedroom door.  Trying to be as quiet as possible, Caine opened 
Hannah?s door the rest of the way and looked in on the child.  

Hannah lay in a fetal position, tears streaming down her face as she yelled 
incoherently.  The only words Caine could make out for the child?s screams were 
?daddy? and ?no?.  It broke Caine?s heart, to see this wonderful little girl so 
tortured in her sleep.  Caine moved over to the side of Hannah?s bed and sat 
down, resting her back against the head board, she wrapped her arms around the 
child?s shoulders and pulled Hannah into her lap.

At first she tried to resist the comforting arms of Caine but soon, even in her 
sleep, Hannah recognized Caine and began to relax.  It took a while before the 
dreams began to leave, but even while she was fighting her demons in her sleep, 
Hannah felt safe and comforted in Caine?s arms.
