"New Assignment"
By Commander Javan Sierra and Lieutenant Elissabeth Marksbury
Javan looked over the activity reports on the deck that the
delegation had been housed on. Needless to say, it didn't look
promising. Several arguments had broken out and the situation had
been handled with due care, but without tact. Javan stared at the
remarks made by each officer involved in the infractions and wasn't
pleased. For the most part, it was ensigns who hadn't had experience
dealing with political negotiations.
"Commander Sierra to Lieutenant Marksbury, please report to my office
immediately." It was time for Javan to put someone in charge of that
deck. She had the highest training of all his officers at his
disposal. She could handle it - or so he hoped.
When Lissi's comm beeped again, she was slightly startled. She hadn't
expected to talk to anyone else today. Her interest was piqued with
Commander Sierra's request. He hadn't so much as spoken to her since
the first time that they had met. She had went about her duties, when
she wasn't in sickbay, reporting to her immediate supervisor.
"I'm on my way," she responded. Straightening her uniform, she headed
out the door and quickly down the hallway. She passed a corridor that
was supposed to be secure, but a quick glance showed the guard
reading a PADD instead of being vigilant. She recognized him as
Ensign Faust, whom she hadn't been really impressed with. This
confirmed her opinion.
She stepped around the corner, confident that he hadn't seen her. She
was able to retrace her steps and come up behind him using a side
passage. He was laughing silently at whatever it was he was reading.
Lissi drew her phaser and placed it on the back of his neck. "You're
now dead," she told him quietly. The guard stiffened, having been
taken completely by surprise. "I hope whatever that PADD contained
was entertaining enough to die for, Ensign Faust."
She withdrew her weapon and holstered it. "Turn around." When he
complied, she told him, "This is unacceptable and will be placed on
your record. Where should you have been stationed, Ensign?"
"Back against the door, ma'am," he told her, standing at attention.
"And where should your attention have been?" The fact that her voice
remained calm and quiet was more unnerving to the Ensign than being
caught.
"Watching both access corridors, ma'am."
"And should you have any such peripheral devices on you, Ensign?"
"No, ma'am."
She held out her hand and he turned over his PADD. "You can pick this
up with Commander Sierra after your shift. I'm sure he will be
looking forward to talking to you." She turned and continued on her
way, rather disgusted at the Ensign's behavior, but hoping he had
learned his lesson.
Reaching Sierra's office she rang the chime and entered at his
command.
"Junior Lieutenant Marksbury reporting as ordered, sir."
"Lieutenant Marksbury, thank you for being so prompt. I have a new
assignment for you. I want you to take up the supervising of our
guests on the delegation deck. The more and more time that passes
the more and more they become rambunctious and highly annoying,"
Javan slid a PADD across the metal surface of his desk, "There are
the orders for Junior Lieutenant Gaskin - he's currently in charge."
"Thank you, sir," she replied, taking the PADD. "Though I must warn
you, I am not too sure of my people skills - I haven't been exactly
trained in the diplomacy department, but I will do my best." The
smile on her lips radiated to her eyes and made her look quite
pretty. It was obvious that she loved her job.
"And, in addition, I'm proud to officially present to you this," he
shuffled a small black box across the desk to her grasp. "You're
officially the rank of Lieutenant First Class - your accompanying
golden pip is residing in that box. You have your orders,
Lieutenant, dismissed."
"Thank you, sir," she nodded curtly, "But one more thing, if I may?"
"Yes?" Javan raised his eyebrows in expectation.
Handing over the PADD, she told him, "I confiscated this from Ensign Faust
while on duty and informed him that he may pick it up with you after shift. I
apologise if I should've handled the situation differently, sir."
"Anything else?"
"No."
"Then you may go."
Lissi exited Sierra's office and checked her wrist chronometer to see how much
longer before she needed to report for duty.
"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always
do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great."
