Braelin and Garrett

Braelin had decided some time ago where she wanted to be. It didn't take
much doing to get herself placed on the brand new USS Avalon. And with that
accomplished, she was one of the first crew members to board and begin getting
settled into her quarters. She had requested delta shift, figuring it would be
nice and quiet in Sickbay on the overnight, and that would put her on call
for gamma and alpha if needed. Beta shift would be hers and hers alone, so she
could choose to socialize with the alpha shift crew, or get some sleep if she
felt like it. It was beta shift now, and Brae was in her quarters, putting
away her personal belongings. The new uniforms were different, but not bad,
although off duty she was wearing a plain black jumpsuit.

Suddenly the lights in her quarters dimmed to a soft glow.

Brae looked up, and around. She knew that warm feeling down her spine.
"Garrett?"

There was a pop of light and before her stood the Q known as Garrett,
dressed in the Starfleet uniforms of the olden days. "Hello there, Brae."

Not so long ago, even as humans reckoned time, Braelin would have been
annoyed. Now, though, she had come to terms with Garrett's sudden appearances.
She
smiled, knowing how incongruous it appeared on her Vulcanoid --and
Vulcan-schooled -- features. "Your uniform's a little out of date."

He raised his eyebrows as he looked down, and then over to her uniforms in
the open closet. "Now, wait just a second here..."

Brae laughed. "At least you found me." Without any fancy gestures or flashes
of light, his antiquated uniform was exchanged for a simple outfit in black,
similar to hers.

He looked down. "Not bad. But I still prefer you in that exotic dancer
outfit."

"I'll have to wear it for you... some other time," she chuckled, and turned
to close her closet on the crisp new uniforms.

"I'm holding you to that," he said as he plopped down in the large chair at
the other end of her new quarters. "So why the new look?"

"New times, new looks..." Braelin went to the replicator and ordered a tray
of snacks. She was acutely aware that the replicator logs needed to show her
usage; there would be inquiries if she didn't eat ship's food. Bringing the
tray to where Garrett sat, she set it on the side table and -- after a
moment's
hesitation -- parked herself on his lap. "Have a puff pastry with shiitake
mushrooms."

He grinned at her as she sat in his lap, and chowed down on the pastry,
"That's good... Not nearly as good as those... what did you call them...
Handburgers?"

"Hamburgers, although why they're called that when there's no ham in them, I
don't know." She munched on a couple of the tiny pastries herself, one with
mushrooms and another with spinach and feta cheese. "These are pretty good,
for replicated food. So... as I said, you found me."

He nodded. "Yes, I wasn't really paying too much attention on the time or
space. I focused mainly on your essence and found you. I'm finding it easier
to home in on you now."

"Well..." She shrugged, but inwardly his attention gave her a warm feeling.
"Hood was being drydocked, and I could have stayed and taken whatever posting
they gave me, but I felt a need to be in the time I was born into... so here
I am."

"But you used your powers to get something you wanted out of it..." He
paused for a moment. "I think I might be rubbing off on you."

Brae laughed and popped another pastry into her mouth. "How do you think I
got aboard Hood in the first place? I had to come back to my own time
eventually. The important thing is not to have any effect on the ephemerals or
their
history, I told you that. And that is why NO ONE is going to find out about
me here. On Hood, it was kind of safe to let Amy know. But here... they know
about our people in this time. So it's not safe."

"So should I not pop in on you?"

She looked up at him and then rested her head on his shoulder. "Just not in
front of other people. But I'd miss you terribly if you stopped visiting me."

He grinned at her and ran his fingers through her hair as she rested her
head on him. "Good. Because I would miss you as well. And I wouldn't want to
jeopardize you at all."

Brae did something she'd been thinking of for weeks. She turned her head,
put a hand alongside his face to hold him still for a moment, and lightly
kissed
 him on the lips.

Garrett was completely caught off guard and for the first time he was left
speechless as Brae kissed him.

It wasn't hard to read his surprise, and Braelin grinned, putting her head
back down on his shoulder. She hoped he would visit her very often. Very, very
often.
