<USS Avalon> Messhall Chatter

"Messhall Chatter"
Log by Lieutenant First Class Isaac Mahler
Chief Medical Officer, USS Avalon NCC-27926-C

It had been another typical day in Sickbay and now Nurses Rayna Marim
and Aida t'Aral were glad to be off-shift. Evidently, from the number of
people
in the ship's Messhall, the same was true for quite a number of others in
the various departments of the Avalon.

"Good Lord, Ai, I can't understand how you can even hold a cup of that
stuff, much less drink it," frowned Marim, gesturing at her friend's teacup
and the contents therein.

"This? But Ray, it's my favorite, ch'Inasp tea," protested t'Aral. "It's
herbal. Good for you. Here." She passed the cup under Marim's nose, causing
the latter to recoil.

"Eeeew! If I didn't know better, I'd say that stuff was made from ...
from spinach or something green like that, something I just don't like eating.
And if I were pregnant I would've thrown up on smelling that."

"Well, you're not, Ray, so don't complain." t'Aral took a good sip and
then set her cup down, steepling her fingers. "Something tells me it's not
just this alien brew that's bothering you. Come on, now, out with it. Or I'll
send you to the Counselor."

"You'll do nothing of the sort, Ai." Marim sighed. "All that work today
in Sickbay ... interminable inventory which I can't stand ... having to work
on cases like Ensign Lancroft and his tendinitis ... Sergeant Epstein and his
lumbar arthritic pain ..." She shook her head.

"And if people such as you and I were not there, who would see to them?"
queried t'Aral.

"Yeah, yeah, I know. But why do we get people from Engineering and the
Marines requiring such treatment to begin with?"

"Accidents happen ... their Chiefs push them a bit too hard ... dozens
of explanations. Now. I know there's still something on your mind, and you
haven't gotten to it. Come on, Ray, out with it."

"Gee, Ai, I don't even need to see a Counselor, you're doing pretty good
yourself! Well ... I just have to wonder what's with the sudden turnaround
and heading so fast towards Sector 001? I mean, I've heard little to none
about it, but there's some muttering about why we're being recalled."

    "Some word on a grapevine?"

"Yeah, Ai, and I just can't get some people to open wide enough to
really drop enough of a clue."

"Well ..." t'Aral took another generous sip from her mug, "... perhaps
there are some times when it's best we don't know ... until they tell us. Know
what I mean, Ray?"

"Maybe so, Ai. I'm just not so sure."

"If it's any comfort to you, I'm not, either. Well." t'Aral stood up.
"Enough for this Messhall chatter. What say I meet you in Holodeck 2 in 5
minutes for a good old-fashioned workout?"

    "See you there, Ai."
