"Meeting with the Commodore"
Ambassador Lanek & Commodore Crusher
The administration building on the Academy campus was just starting to buzz
as the early morning hours ticked by. Commodore Crusher walked through the
main lobby towards the elevators, nodding at cadets and faculty as she passed,
and offering them a warm smile. She had a rather pleasant morning and was in
a fairly good mood. She rode the elevator up to the top floor, and then
walked down the hall towards her office. When she stepped into the outer
waiting
area, her yeoman was waiting for her with the morning reports and a cup of
coffee.
“Thanks Jon, I need this.” She told him as she took the mug.
Yeoman Mitchell smiled. “You always need it, Ma’am.” The young man
followed
Sara into her office and recited her day to her as she set her brief case on
her desk and then headed over to her topical fish take. “You have a meeting
at ten-thirty with Captain Ketchum, you have quad reviews after lunch, a
meeting with the Director of the Vulcan Science academy to work out the
details
of student exchange, and Ambassador Lanek has arrived from Feringinar and is
on his way here.”
Sara turned after feeding her fish to look at Mitchell. “You could have told
me that first.”
Mitchell frowned. “Sorry Ma’am.”
“It’s ok. It’s actually about time he got back to me. No doubt he’s
realized I’ve canceled all his contracts with us. So Jon be on your toes
when he
gets here.”
“Yes Ma’am.” Mitchell replied.
Sara smiled at him as she sat behind her desk. “Bet you didn’t plan on
having to deal with ambassadors and starship captains when you signed on to be
my
yeomen did you, Jon.”
Mitchell laughed. “Not really Ma’am but it’s a good thing for both our
careers.” Mitchell smiled at Sara and then went back out to his own desk to
await
the ambassador.
Ambassador Lanek was not in a pleasant mood. "How dare this Hew-mon female
cancel all my contracts. This is outrageous," he thought to himself. He had
gotten clearance to beam directly to the Commodore's office. He would make
sure
that she restored his contracts immediately if not sooner.
He always hated the feeling of having his molecules spread all over the
place, but beaming in had it's advantages. First he would pop in unannounced
and
surprise the Commodore and secondly he could bypass all the foolish security
people and nosey yoemen. He set the coordinates for her office and proceeded
to beam in. When he materialized he immediately spoke, causing the Commodore
to spill her coffee.
"Commodore Crusher I presume. I am Ambassador Lanek and I belive we have
some business to take care of. Primarily why you canceled my contracts and why
there is a Starfleet vessel in Ferengi airspace?"
He made himself comfortable, sitting in the chair in front of her desk. It
was always a joy when he could distract or upset the routine of these
Hew-mon's. The Commodore definetly did not like the sudden intrusion or hot
coffee
all over her lap. Lanek just sat there and smiled.
Like most Betaziods, Sara didn't like Ferengi. They couldn’t be read, not
even by the strongest telepaths. The shock of having one appear in her
officer, topped with her slipped coffee, had abruptly soured Sara’s mood.
She looked
at the Ferengi Ambassador with contemptuous eyes as she reached over and
opened the direct comm channel to Mitchell. “It would appear, Jon, that the
Ambassador decided to by pass protocol. Would you kindly have Security waiting
to
escort him out the proper way when we are finished.”
After getting Mitchell’s reply Sara closed the comm and stood. She walked
over to the en suite to change her uniform, without a word to the troll
sitting
in front of her desk. A few minutes later she came out in a clean uniform
and retook her seat. “Now then Ambassador, about those contracts and that
ship.
Your going to allow that ship to remain in your space, your going to allow a
team of officers to beam down to your planet, and once they’re assignment is
compete I’ll renew your contracts.”
Lanek listened to this female Hew-mon and was not happy at all with what he
was hearing. Hew-mon's were so.....so.....he couldn't come up with a proper
word for it. A dead tube grub was better than dealing with Hew-mon's,
especially this uppity one. Didn't they know their place, but again what could
you
expect from a race that allowed it's female's to wear clothes. The thought
alone was disgusting. Still he had to deal with her but in the end he would
come
out on top.
"Now Commodore I really don't think you are in any position to tell me what
I will and will not do. It seems to me that you are the one who should be
asking for my blessing and that of the Grand Nagus. I am not about to let that
ship remain in Ferengi space nor am I about to let them beam down to
Ferenginar. As for those contract's I am sure that I will be able to get them
reinstated without your blessing. Now if you want to talk in a manner more
condusive
to business then we can talk, otherwise I am afraid I will have to leave and
deal with that ship and it's crew on my own. I don't think that the President
of Starfleet would appreciate news of that nature."
Lanek sat in his chair just watching the female. He had heard about her but
wasn't afraid of her. Besides he could always just beam back to his ship and
let her deal with her problems. He had better things to do than just discuss
business with a female.
Sara sat back in her chair and crossed her arms. "Talking business is what
we're here for, Ambassador, but first we need to get a few things settled.
One, just so you know the President of the *Federation* is a friend of my
family's house on Betazed. Two, all of your contracts are with the Academy and
when
it comes to the Academy I am the be all and the end all. Third, if you
interfere with that ship or the team of officers on it I will have you charged
with aiding and abetting an AWOL officer and with being an accomplice to
murder."
A small smile spread across her face. "How do you think the Grand Nagus
would react to having someone he trusted enough to work with such large
accounts
arrested and those accounts lost."
A scowl appeared Lanek's face as he got up and went and sat on the desk next
to the female. "So you think you are the be all and the end all when it
comes to dealing with me? You have alot to learn Madam. You are the one who
needs
my help, so it seems that trying to placate me or threaten me with charges,
which we both know are ridiculous is most unbecoming. I am not afraid of the
Grand Nagus, as you should know he is my brother and dumber than a box of
stem bolts. He listens to me, so you should be trying to get on my good side if
you want to get your people onto Ferenginar. Otherwise I may have them
arrested for violation of international space treaties and whatever else I can
come
up with."
Lanek just waited. He could tell this was going to be a test of wills and he
knew he could outlast any Hew-mon, especially a female.
The closeness of the troll made Sara's skin crawl. She was definitely going
to have to shower before going to Aeriannah's soccer game, and she might just
have her desk striped and restained just to be on the safe side. "I didn't
say I had any power of you Ambassador, I do however have power over what
happens on this campus. If I were you I'd be more willing to go along with me
on
this. You see the battle games with the Klingon Academy is coming up, and
after that the Science fair with the Vulcan school. We'll have hundreds of
visiting students over the next few months." Sara paused a moment and then
smiled.
"Are you seeing the gold pressed latauim flying out the window yet,
Ambassador? Without the renewal of your contracts I'll be using someone's
else's
services. They'll be making a lot of money."
The talk of money made Lanek's large ears perk up. Perhaps he had under
estimated this female. The games and the Science fair would bring in plenty of
latinum, most of which he could/would pocket. Lucky for him the Commodore would
not know this. He stood up and walked back to the chair and looked at the
Hew-mon. He would have to make it look like this was his idea. After all he
couldn't have it known that he had let a Hew-mon female win.
"Okay Commodore let's talk. You say I have to let this ship into Ferengi
space and let them land on Ferenginar. What is to say that they won't, in their
rush to capture this villian of yours, accidently shoot a Ferengi? What
guarentees can you give me that this is not going to happen? I don't want a
bunch
of cowboy 'fleeter's running around Ferenginar haphazardly shooting at
people. What are you going to do to prevent that from happening? I need
assurances
that my people are safe and not in harms way."
Being this close to a Hew-mon female wearing clothes was not the most
appealing thing he had ever done. He would make sure to change once he returned
to
his ship with contracts signed, in his hands.
"Your people won't even know we've been there, Ambassador. The people we
have handling this are some of our best. Aside from the fact that humans and
Ferengi look nothing alike which would make it easy for my people to fire only
at who their after, they've been ordered to bring said person back unharmed.
There is no danger from my people. The person they're after I can't speak for
which is why it is vital we get him." Sara looked at the Ambassador and have
him a slight smile. "If you can be of any help in finding him and
apprehending him, we would be, I would be most grateful and it could be very
profitable
for you."
"A profit is always a good thing and you have proposed a rather intriquing
offer. Give me my signed contracts now and I will see what I can do in helping
to capture this man. As for your people, we may not look alike but you must
admit that there are some who are not overly fond of us, you included. If you
give your word that no one on Ferenginar is in danger then we will have a
deal."
He didn't want to give in to the female, but profit was much more of a
motivator than trying to outsmart this female. Besides Lanek already had a
suspicion as to where this "outlaw" was, which in the long run would serve him
best.
Sara slid a padd over to the troll and then took three from her desk draw.
"You sign that giving my people permission to be on your homeworld and I'll
sign these renewing your contracts." She watched as the little made signed his
name and signed her own. "You have my word that my people will be careful and
that you'll be well compensated for your help, Ambassador. Thank you."
After exchanging the padds, Sara stood and nodded at the troll. "Good day,
Ambassdor."
After tucking the padds inside his jacket, Lanek pressed the button that
would beam him back to his ship. He had no desire to deal with Security.
Besides the faster he got away the better.
