Matters of Life
-- a log by
Captain Keith Ketchum and Lieutenant Felicity Roan
Felicity, still in her nightshirt, continued her journey towards deck
2. Her mission was to speak with the Captain about her startling dream
concerning the Avalon's sister ship, the Allegiance.
Her mind was racing, but she couldn't shake the dark images from her
dream. If she didn't say anything and there was something wrong, she'd never
forgive herself. At worse, the Captain would think she was a raving lunatic
and would ignore her, she was willing to take that chance.
As the doors opened on Deck 2, she peered around the edge of the lift,
hoping that perhaps no one would see her and she could make a fool of herself
and be done with it. Not so fortunate, as walking past was Ensign Mor'ell
from Engineering. He gave her a curious look.
"Doctor? Are you well Ma'am? Can I get you some assistance? You
don't look yourself."
Shaking her head, she looked down at her toes then back up again. "No
Ensign. I'm fine. I've come in search of the Captain, it's quite urgent."
He indicated that he'd seen the Captain near his quarters just ahead.
She smiled weakly, thanked him and moved ahead quickly. She turned the
corner and there he stood. He was reading a PADD of some sort. She approached
him
a bit more aggressively than she should have.
"Captain Ketchum. I know it's late...I know I'm in my nightshirt and
I know you think me a raving loon, but I must speak to you urgently. It's
about the crew of the Allegiance. I think they are in grave danger."
"But Doctor, the crew of the Allegiance are in quarters on the Avalon
currently, while we tow the ship to a safer distance to begin repairing it."
He looked her up and down, "Now as for a raving loon, I would never think
that."
She felt his glance and blushed. Still, she wasn't put off.
"Captain, with all due respect, there is something on that ship and there are
crew
unaccounted for...or there will be. I'm certain of it, but I can't say why.
We
need to investigate that ship. Sooner than later." She looked back down at
her toes, feeling a put out of place in her nightdress.
"Yes, I know about the unaccounted crew, we sent over four members to
her to get some computer information, two from Avalon, two from Allegiance,
and unfortunately, the two from Allegiance were attacked. I am also waiting
on
the report from Karg on his surveillance mission, that he went on,
unbeknownst to even me, but we will deal with that also." Keith motioned to
his office,
"Perhaps we should get out of the corridor."
Felicity nodded slowly, still having that uneasy feeling from the
dream. "Yes Sir, of course. I have forgotten my manners. I'm sorry to accost
you at this hour."
Her heart sank, knowing that there was even a slight bit of truth to her
dream. Missing crew on Allegiance...missing crew from Avalon, neither were
good
omens.
"You didn't accost me, Lieutenant, you came to me to alert me of your
feelings on the matter of the Allegiance. Those are quite different issues,
indeed."
"Yes, but I'm worried. Confidentially sir, I have no telepathic,
empathic or other 'sixth sense' if you will. Why this dream has made me coming
running to you, I can't say. I am trying to speak about this with as few
people
as possible. I had a conversation with my brother last week that has me even
more concerned." She studied him for a moment, not wanting to say more
about her Intelligence conversation with Dylan.
"Concerned about, what?"
"My brother mentioned that someone had come to him about there being
a Section 31 presence on this ship sir and that I should be careful."
Keith nods wondering how much information he should share also, "From
my own experience, he might be correct, but as to whom, that I cannot say"
She nodded and added simply. "I'm not sure I believe him, he has been
known to exaggerate from time to time."
Keith nodded, "Perhaps, we should both sleep on this information, and
tell no one else."
"Perhaps...I'm not sure I'll be sleeping more this evening. My
primary concern remains the Allegiance and her crew. The other subject will
likely
still be here when we are finished."
"I suppose you are correct, Doctor. I will advise Commander Skyler
that no crew will go alone to the Allegiance without proper security measures.
The creature must be stopped."
She paled at the mention of the creature and again just nodded. The
uneasy feeling had not subsided but she'd have to again have a leap of faith.
It seemed that this assignment was full of these. With a sigh she turned to
leave. "Again, thank you for your time Captain and I'm sorry to have disturbed
you. Of course, I'll not speak of this with anyone, and considering my
attire, for obvious reasons. Good night Sir."
"Good night, Doctor, and if you have any more dreams that you need to
talk about, my door is always open."
She nodded simply and turned to exit his quarters. Once back in her
quarters, she sat, drank hot tea, studied the Allegiance manifest, and last
mission logs. She wondered to herself, 'what had made a good ship go horribly
wrong?'
