<USS Avalon> "Making Up"

Making Up
By Lieutenant Second Class Elissabeth Marksbury and
Lieutenant First Class James Maturin

Her first impulse was to walk right in. James had told her she was welcome to
stay. However, she thought it best to give him some time. She pressed the
chime and the door opened immediately, like he had been waiting.

"Hey," she said plainly, for lack of a better greeting.

"Hey yourself." They stared at each other for a moment, searching for words.

"Well, this is awkward," she said.

"Come in."

The doors closed behind her.

"I talked to Laura. Thank you for apologising. And I wanted to say I'm sorry
for being so harsh with you," he told her.

She wrapped her arms around herself and gazed at him intently, "You were right,
though. I still owe you apologies. And probably more after it's all said and
done. I just hope you don't hate me. I had to do what was right and I'm sorry
for getting you involved at all."

"What are you talking about?"

"I went to see Admiral Pew this morning," she took a deep breath. "And I told
him everything. I also told him that you didn't say anything because I played
on our emotional ties and asked you not to. I'm hoping you only get a
reprimand...I tried to take the responsibility."

"Okay." He paused a moment. "I guess that's good. Not so much that you're
taking all the blame - I knew exactly what I was doing and, in fact, I offered
not to say anything because I was worried about you. But I'm glad you told
him. My conscious was really starting to bother me." He took a step towards
her and ran his hand down the side of her hair. "I'm not mad at you."

Lissi wrapped her arms around his neck hugged tightly. "I don't know what my
life would be like without you in it, James."

"Let's not find out, okay?" Once he released her, he asked, "Are you not
staying here anymore? All of your things were gone."

"I just thought that you could use the space - away from me, I mean. I didn't
know how angry you'd be at me. Especially since I sorta turned you in along
with myself."

"Understandable." He led her to the sofa and offered her a drink.

"No, thanks. I can't stay long - I have a job to do this evening."

"What is it?"

She explained about meeting Kaylee and the things that had transgressed with
Admiral Pew.

"So...what's going to happen now?" he asked.

"I have no idea. Worst case, one or both of us is looking at an Article 15. I
don't think we'll lose rank - at least I hope not. Best scenario is that Pew
doesn't want any of this on paper so that it doesn't look bad on him. We get
a verbal ass chewing and go on with life. I'm thinking somewhere in between
those two."

"They going to do the procedure again?" He looked worried.

"I don't know. I don't know anything just yet."

"It's gonna be okay. No matter what. You did the right thing," he told her
and wrapped her in a hug.
