The lesser of the Evals
-Dodge Thomas
The past few days had been pleasant for Dodge: No crippling radiation, no
crying women slamming into him in the halls, no warp core breaches...positively
bliss.
Positively boring.
Dodge sighed heavily, his shift nearing it's end. The techies had left already,
citing the ever popular Ensign Sirius Black and his holodeck get together. He
had, of course, been invited but had politely declined. His head hurt, his feet
hurt, his neck hurt and he was direly convinced that he was indeed about to
die...or at least suffer a great deal.
His eyes flicked to the chronometer, then to the doors where Ensign Aguatequa
and Criswell (who had probably protested being asked to work, as they would
miss the party) had just entered.
Right on time, Dodge thought. As usual. If he could say one thing about those
two, it was that they were punctual. He leaned back in his seat and mused.
Lieutenant...wow. Even if it was just JG, it was still lieutenant, and he
hadn't expected a promotion so soon.
As such, he had a few more responsibilities, the first and foremost being to
assign team leaders in engineering. The former engineer (god rest his soul) had
overlooked or neglected to do so. There were only four candidates to pick from,
as his engineering staff only consisted of five junior officers and a...well, a
large amount of techs. Each team would have a leader, eight techs and a
secondary leader.
Skill-wise, Hobbes Harvey had the leading shot for Beta team leader, but
personality had to be factored in and to put it nicely, mister Harvey was a
personality vacuum. That left Dodge with Anilla Aguatequa, Leila Criswell,
Summer Khellian, and Sirius Black.
Dodge shook his head and pulled the records of his engineers out of his desk.
Shoving aside the endless stacks of PADDs and setting the five Engineers in
question, he began the semi-tedious task of pre-evaluations.
"Aguatequa, Anilla. Ensign." He read aloud, then stopped at the small yellow
flashing prompt.
Blink...Blink...Blink...
He sighed, verging on a groan, then began. "Ensign Aguatequa is a well skilled
young woman, able to perform multiple tasks with little trouble. In fact, given
a list of things to do and left to do them, she can complete in my estimate,
nearly twice the work that an average engineer is expected to do in the typical
work day."
"Generally speaking, she is a well liked individual who gets along with all of
her co-workers. However, she has proven several times that she cannot be left
in charge of a situation, due to the simple fact that she either dislikes or is
unable to make even the most menial decisions, preferring to have them made for
her. As such, I will not be placing her in charge of either the Alpha or the
Beta team here in engineering."
He set her record down, feeling indifferent about her or her career choices.
She was her own person and she knew her flaws. It was up to her, not him, to
change herself. "Moving right along. Black, Sirius. Ensign. Ensign Black is a
highly qualified young man who seems to interface with the computer on a mental
level, no matter how foolish that sounds. I'm convinced that his speed and
understanding of computers rivals even the legendary Commander Data. That's all
off the record of course."
"Khellian, Summer. Ensign. Ensign Khellian has been immensely helpful during
the past few weeks. She is willing and able to do the various tasks around the
department. She has shown herself skilled and tactful when dealing with the
computer or with her coworkers. Knowing this, I have decided that she would be
the ideal choice for the Alpha team leader. Furthermore, I have decided to
assign Ensign Sirius Black as her secondary."
Dodge took a small break, replicating some coffee and a glazed doughnut for a
snack. He looked at the coffee and the doughnut, then recycled them, deeming
the caffeine unhealthy and the doughnut...well, it just looked gross. He
returned to his desk and continued the evaluations.
"Criswell, Leila. Ensign. Like Ensign Khellian, Ensign Criswell is a useful and
competent worker, willing to do anything from plasma conduit maintenance to a
warp core overhaul and doing so with a very positive attitude. Several times, I
have seen her encouraging and assisting various technicians during the average
work day. As such, I am assigning her as the Beta Team leader with full
confidence in her ability to perform."
He set Leila Criswell's record down, smiling at the beaming face that was
looking up at him. "Your welcome. And last, but not least: Harvey, Hobbes.
Ensign. Ensign Harvey is...in a word...unique. His outlook on life is somewhat
fatalistic, but he generally keeps to himself. Actually, he seems more
comfortable talking to himself than to anyone else around him. Luckily, being
somewhat daft is his only flaw. He is highly skilled in all forms of
engineering activities and computations. He was also invaluably helpful in the
recent Polaron Radiation incident. He pointed out several flaws in our
make-shift shield modifications and then remedied them. Given his skills and
his flaws, I still feel confident assigning him as Ensign Criswell's secondary
on the Beta Team."
He looked at the five PADDs lying on his desk before having the data sent to
the commander for official evaluations. Interesting, he mused, that I can
promote them within but actually sending them up in the long ladder is up to
the Commander and the Captain.
With the evaluations over and his headache still pounding behind his eyes,
Dodge headed off out of engineering towards a nice night of rest and relaxation.
