<USS Avalon> Log-Duality

Duality

-The as of yet nameless and somewhat enigmatic ?Engineer?

The engineer's quarters were as dark, silent and cold as the grave. The only
source of illumination came from the computer screen which was currently
displaying the default Starfleet emblem of peace and prosperity, good will and
safety.

The engineer hated all of that.

With a breeze as cold and foreboding as the room itself, The engineer entered.

"Cocytus, initiate protocol Theta Nine Zero."

An beautifully made music box that had been resting on the shelf shimmered
suddenly, fading into a dull, black box. It made a click and the sounds of
locks cycling accompanied by the faint buzz of a forcefield activating filled
the room momentarily.

"I've taken the liberty of opening a channel."

The engineer looked in shock at the small creature that was suddenly sitting on
his bed. "You what?!"

Cocytus swatted absently at a non-existent fly. "Oh don't worry, it's secure.
They won't find it, it's been routed through my processor."

A look of relief washed over the engineer's face. "You're program is far too
versatile. I'll have to delete some more subroutines."

"Do that and I may find a way to deactivate the safeties you've installed. Or
maybe in your infinite bumbling, you'll manage to delete them yourself."

"Don't get your hopes up. God you're the devil."

"You named me appropriately. Cocytus...Dante's ninth circle of hell. The signal
has been returned. Shall I put him on?"

"By all means."

The Starfleet emblem vanished, replaced by a black screen. Darkness filled the
engineer's quarters.

"You have done well," a hollow voice that gave the person who heard it the
mildest feeling of death and decay. Whoever was speaking was obviously much
advanced in age.

"Thank you, my master."

"You're progress...has it been impeded? That Sierra man is a well-known and
publicly spoken section thirty-one agent. He has not been of any trouble?"

"No. It is not he who I worry about, although he does exhibit more than a
healthy share of inquisitive nosiness. He looks in places where he should not,
and that may be troublesome in the future."

"But now?"

"There is nothing new to report. The ship passed through a polaron radiation
field recently."

"Really?" The disembodied voice coughed and then spoke again. "Were there any
deaths?"

"No, it was a clean sweep."

"Polaron radiation is such a fickle weapon, even when utilized with the utmost
safety. Have you remodulated your shields?"

"Yes. All goes well."

"And the target?"

"Still unknowingly resistant. He is so careful in every step he takes. This is
where I fear that Javan person may interfere."

"Very well. I will not keep you any longer. Good luck to you. May fate be kind."

"As to you, master."

The default Starfleet emblem popped up on the screen again.

"Cocytus, deactivate all security protocols."

"Done."

"Initiate covert subroutines."

The creature vanished and the small black box resting on the engineer's shelf
melted into a ornately decorated music box.

"Goodnight Cocytus."

"Goodnight mistress."

The engineer stood and stalked out of her quarters, straitening her uniform and
proceeding directly to engineering where she would begin another normal day of
treachery.
