> Georgia was in sickbay trying to adjust to the fact that just as she was
> getting used to a new Chief Medical Officer, they up and leave. She was just
> getting used to Dr. Moreya's ways of doing things and then Starfleet up and
> snatches her away. At least Skyler was still around.
>
> Georgia was not a person that took easily to change and now she was going
> to have to adjust to the new CMO, Dr. Felicity Roan. Dr. Roan was originally
> signed on to be the Counselor, however with Dr. Moreya leaving she was
> becoming the new Chief Medical Officer. Georgia really hadn't gotten a chance
> to
> get to know Dr. Roan before she got promoted. Hopefully things wouldn't
> change
> to much around sickbay. But then again they already had in just a short span
> of time.
>
> Felicity walked out of the Captain's ready room, and made her journey
> back onto the Turbo lift down to the Medical deck. She gathered the few
> items
> she had left in the counseling area and headed for the Main Medical area.
> She was a bit unsure how she would be received by the Medical crew, but she
> understood that there was one new assistant, Dr. Rashon, so they could adjust
> together she hoped. There was a Dr. Lewis who had served with the Commander
> for a long while. Felicity concluded that she would have a wealth of
> knowledge and experience about the Avalon and her crew that would be vital to
> making
> treatment quick. She continued scanning for nurses and medical technicians
> seeing if any names were familiar or if there were any skills that would be
> of
> essential use. She almost walked into the door and was grateful as they
> opened with the usual 'Whoosh.'
>
> She looked around to see who was there, hoping there were fewer staff
> around. She wished she wasn't so shy, but alas, she was who she was. She
> plastered on her usual 'meeting smile' and approached one of the Medical
> Technicians. "Good afternoon. I'm Doctor Roan."
>
> The Tech turned and got a bit of a worried look, "Dr. Roan, the new
> Chief? Umm, great. I'm K'ylandra. I'll go see if Dr. Lewis or Dr. Rashon
> is
> available, okay? I ...uh...uh, look forward to working for...err, with you."
>
> K'ylandra scurried off.
>
> Felicity wasn't sure what made people nervous with a title attached to
> someone's name, in this case, CHIEF. That just meant more paperwork for her
> and more attendance at meetings that took her away from medicine. This was
> going to be an adjustment back to hands on medicine versus the theoretical
> practice of Counseling.
>
> Georgia was in the main sickbay area straightening things up, for when
> the new Doctor arrived, when Med Tech K'ylandra came running in. She was
> moving so fast she almost ran right into Georgia.
>
> "Uh, Ensign Lewis, the CHIEF is here and wanted me to see if, "Dr.
> Lewis and Dr. Rashon", were available. Are you available Dr. Lewis?"
>
> Georgia laughed, "K'ylandra, I am not a Dr. I am a nurse. I hope she
> realizes that or she is in for a big surprise. Tell her I will meet her in a
> few minutes, just as soon as I finish cleaning up the sickbay."
>
> K'ylandra left with the message, but first had to find Ensign Rashon
> before returning to Dr. Roan. She was going to be one tired puppy with all
> the
> running around she was doing and she wasn't getting paid enough, that was for
> sure.
>
> Tali was hiding in the trauma unit immersed in a medical file she had been
> reviewing and updating. There were no patients currently in there and it was
> nice and quiet when K'ylandra interrupted her. "Sorry to intrude Doctor
> Rashon..." the voice was so unexpected that Tali jolted upright. K'ylandra
> chuckled
> a bit when she saw that her entrance had scared Ensign Rashon then went on,
> "the new Chief is here and asking for you."
> She nodded and then replied, "Thanks K'ylandra, I'll be out as soon as I
> finish this up."
> "Ok, I'll let her know you're on your way out," the med tech hurried back
> out the door, leaving Tali. Smiling wryly she said to no one in particular,
> "Two assignments and three department heads in two weeks, I'm on a roll these
> days." At least she hadn't had time to get too used to Dr Moreya's way of
> running the SB before getting it changed on her. Tali put the finishing
> touches on
> the medical file and then headed out into the main sickbay to meet her new
> chief.
>
Georgia was just finishing up in the main sickbay when Dr. Rashon
walked in. "Good morning Georgia."
"Good morning Dr. Rashon. Have you met the new Chief yet? I was just
about to go and meet her. If you would like, we good go together. You know
safety in numbers."
"I would be happy to go with you to meet our new boss. Have you heard
anything at all about her?"
"To be honest, Doctor I haven't heard too much of anything, other than
she originally signed on to be the counselor and now that Dr. Moreya has left
she has been promoted to Chief Medical Officer. I guess we will find out what
she has in store for us, in just a few minutes."
The two women walked toward the CMO's office to meet with the new CHIEF
and to see how much things were going to change. Hopefully they wouldn't
change to much. They could only hope............
Felicity had found her way to a central conference room and awaited the
return of K'ylandra. She came scurrying in just moments before Georgia and
Tali. "Okay, Dr. Roan, they are on their way. Do you need anything else?"
"No, thank you for your assistance. It's greatly appreciated. I look
forward to working with you." She smiled as the young ensign exited and went
about her business. She pulled out a PADD and began to study the orders for
Medical and the last set of logs from Dr. Moreya. Upon further search, she
noted that Georgia was in fact a nurse and not a physician. She would have to
rely less on the medical manifest and more on the actual biographies.
Just then she noted that the two ladies were approaching the
conference room. She stood, took another deep breath and smiled. "Good
morning,
Ensign Lewis, Doctor Rashon. I'm Doctor Felicity Roan. Please come in and
have a
seat. I'd like to discuss some issues with you."
As they sat at the table, she handed each of them a PADD containing a
briefing on what Medical needed to accomplish in terms of inoculations for the
impending increased amounts of radiation. "Ladies, as you know, Dr. Moreya
has been recalled and reassigned within the Fleet per Admiral Valdez.
Unfortunately, I only got to know her briefly, but she seemed like a great
person.
I'm sure she'll be missed by all of the crew and department. I'm afraid I've
been assigned the difficult job of filling her shoes."
Georgia listened as Dr. Roan, or Felicity as she preferred to be
called, was talking. She knew that Moreya had been recalled and that she would
be
missed, but she was still a little hesitant about working with someone new.
Georgia knew she had to give Felicity a chance, but it would not be easy. She
looked at Dr. Rashon. She didn't really know her that well either, so
everything
was changing around her. She was going to have to talk to Skyler when she had
a chance. All these changes were going to make things difficult for Georgia,
until she got used to everyone and how they did things. Hopefully, this doctor
was here to stay for more than a few weeks.
Tali listened passively as the doctor spoke to them. She caught Georgia's eye
for a moment and knew they were both wondering how much things were going to
chance. It would be easier for her to adapt to any changes Dr Roan would
introduce since she had only been here for a couple weeks. She was sure Georgia
was
probably feeling a lot more apprehensive than herself. The Doctor spoke again
and Tali turned her attention from her thoughts and back to her.
She offered a smile. "I look forward to working with the entire team,
but I wanted to meet with both of you as from what Dr. Moreya's logs
indicated, were key personnel to keeping this department running. My
management style
is not one of being over-authoritative, but more of a personal one. I'd like
you to call me Felicity and I'll call each of you by your first names. We've
got a rough job ahead of getting the entire crew inoculated against
radiation. I'm open to suggestions on the best way to accomplish this...visits
to each
department, random selection, teams that comb each deck, etc. Are there any
questions?"
Georgia spoke up, "At the moment the only question I have, is how much
are you going to change things around here? As it is I think the way we have
been running things has been fairly efficient and productive. It also seems to
work for the injured as well. I realize that I am only a nurse, but I think I
know the crew fairly well, since I have been treating them long before Dr.
Moreya came aboard or even Dr. Rashon here boarded the ship.
"As for the inoculating the crew I have found that the best way is to
go them, because they are not going to come to sickbay. They have a tendency
to avoid sickbay and their physical's. If we divide the inoculation's between
the three of us and K'ylandra I think it is reasonable to think that we can get
this job done within approximately 48 hours." Georgia wondered what the
doctor's thought of her idea. She only guessed that time would tell.
Listening to Georgia's comments Tali thought that the head nurse was a
competent individual and she respected her for it. However the chummy way it
sounded
like Dr. Roan (it would be difficult for her to call her Felicity) spoke of
running her sickbay made her apprehensive. She voiced her agreement with Ensign
Lewis, "It would seem mort efficient if we went to them, if we each take a
couple medics with us we can canvas the ship and get it done rather effectively
I would think." She felt that Georgia was the most trustworthy one to talk to
concerning the medical department of the ship as it were so far. After all she
had the most first hand experience with it. Tali was unsure of what to expect
of either of these two women, but she would do her job to the best of her
ability and trusted they would as well.
Felicity nodded and made notes on each officer's comments. It was
obvious that they were concerned about changes and what Felicity would be doing
to the department. This must be a point of contention with the rest of the
staff and she'd need to address this quickly.
"Thank you for your frank comments and honesty concerning our project.
They are appreciated. Right now, I can't say what or if I'll be modifying
any of our Operating Procedures. I need more time to see how things are
flowing
to say if they need fixing. I subscribe to the school of 'If it's not
broken, don't fix it.' I would like to ensure that we've got a strong set of
Triage
procedures in place for when we have emergencies. If we have that, then I'm
not sure what else we'll need. I understand that the staff might be resistant
to changes, but I will hope to make them minimal."
She paused to give them both a look to let her know that she was being
sincere about her explanation. "Now then, let's move on to the inoculations
for the radiation. " She turned and looked to look at Georgia, "I'd like you
to coordinate with the Med Techs and other nurses to prepare enough of the
inoculations for the entire crew. You can give me a timeline how long you
expect
that to take."
Shifting her attention to Tali, "Dr. Rashon, you and I will coordinate
teams to work with each department to ensure that the hyposprays are
administered to the entire crew with in 12 hours of Ensign Lewis' completion.
We
might not even have that much time. I'd like us to break into 4 teams and hit
Engineering, Security, and the Bridge first. Then to comb the rest of the ship
for civilians and off duty officers."
Turning to face them both she smiled again, "I know this is a lot to
throw at you at once, but I'm sure we'll get through this first mission
together and move on from there. If there are no further questions, let's get
to
work. I'll be pulling together the crew lists for each team to inoculate and
setting up the schedules for the teams to follow. Thank you again for your
time
and I look forward to working with you." She stood and sent them on their
way. She wasn't sure they trusted or believed in her, this would be a leap of
faith on both sides. Hers was to see if they could be trusted, theirs was to
see if she would do what she said.
