"Just Believe"
Lt. Josh Garrity and Ensign. Annabelle Chase.
Hearing the Captain's orders on the shipwide, Josh drew away from Annabelle.
"Almost time..." he told her quietly. Kissing her gently, he extricated himself
from her arms and moved back to the center console again, pulling up the
information from the Avalon's sensors. "You should go now..."
Annabelle looked over the readings that Josh was looking at. "Let me come with
you."
Josh looked at her as though he'd just asked him to cut off his own head. "No,"
he answered, his voice carrying in it an amazed disbelief she'd even asked.
"I had to ask." She watched him a moment longer. He was brilliant and she knew
that if anyone could pull this off it was him, but that didn't do anything
about reliving the fear she felt. Pulling at a chain around her neck, Annabelle
pulled out the medallion she wore. Removing it, she walked over and placed it
around Josh's neck. "It's St. Christopher. He's suppose to watch over travelers
and keep them safe."
Josh looked at the medallion suspiciously. St. Christopher? He examined it
thoroughly. It was metal. Just metal. "How?" he asked after a long moment,
curious to know the mechanics of the medallions purported feats.
"It's an old Human belief." She tried to explain. "The metal doesn't actrally
do anything, it's having faith that protects."
His frown deepened. Faith? In a piece of metal? He looked dubious, but accepted
the gift so as not to offend her. If she believed in it, whether or not there
was logic to that belief, at least she wouldn't worry so much. "Thank you," he
said quietly, turning back to the scans he was monitoring.
She would have laughed if she weren't so scared. "Not faith in the metal, but
faith in.. something.. higher.. something.. more powerful then us.. It's also
about having faith in the person." She walked up and stood right behind him,
her body pressed into his. "Like I have in you."
"I don't....believe...in higher powers," He admitted quietly, turning to face
her again. "is it enough..to just ...well, to just ...believe...in you?"
Annabelle wrapped her arms around him. "It's enough for me."
