<USS Avalon> "Just Be"

Just Beby Ensign Ffej Harak and Petty Officer Vevay Davis

Ffej sat in the lounge gazing out the window, alone at a table in the corner.
Sipping on something called 'Green', it was rather stout for synthahol. His
mind wandered with the stars.

Drifting in through the doors, Vevay wasn't even completely sure why she was
there. Today had been hectic to say the least. She was still up to her ears in
profiles and military records, hence the PADD she carried absently in her hand,
but she needed some coffee and another set of walls to stare at. People were
sat at tables, chattering about nothings and the noise soothed her nerves a
little. She loved her job, but right now, she would give the whole universe to
be just a normal secretary. With a normal boss, she smirked.

"Coffee, black and real strong," she told the replicator. Taking her cup, she
headed to a seat as far from everyone else as she could, just wanting to stare
into the void and be.

His gaze flicked from twinkle to twinkle of the fading stars as they flickered
along the region of space before him. Ffej noticed an attractive woman sit at
the table behind him via the reflection in the view port. He continued to watch
her mirror image over his shoulder.

Feeling eyes on her, she swivelled in her seat, trying to work out if Cross or
Gibson had come in looking for her. She didn't see anyone, so she curled deeper
into her chair, hoping no one would find her. Just a little break, that's all I
want, I swear. Sipping at her coffee, she continued to frown at the stars.

Without turning to face her, "How can such a beautiful view as such before you,
cause such a frown as that? Though it pales in comparison to your own beautiy."

The words formed in her mind, but she was sure there had been no sound to
accompany them. Swivelling again, she still didn't see anyone until she looked
up at the viewport where she found an ensign with staggering blue eyes staring
at her and she blushed. "Er, frown? Was I frowning? I'm sorry, sir."

He smiled warmly at her, standing and gathering his drink. Ffej approached her
table, "May I join you... and please, call me Ffej." He waited for her
acknowledgement before sitting across from her.

She nodded very slightly, still kind of stunned by the way he was talking to
her. "You're betazoid, aren't you?" Oh way to go, Vevay! Really well done on
the whole 'sounding like a moron' thing. Swave, sophisticated, classy. She
sighed, but tried to keep the embarrassment off her face.

He took a drink to hide the smile that crept up on him as the flash of
embarrassment danced through her mind. "What gave me away? Its the hair isn't
it? Maybe the way I walked over. Damn, I was trying to blend in..." Ffej looked
into her green eyes and nearly melted in his seat. "So, tell me Vevay. What
troubles you this fine evening?"

Giggling despite herself, she started fiddling with the PADD in her lap.
"Troubles? Oh, just work, trying to get my head around..." all these profiles,
records. Where's the mistake? Who's to blame? She couldn't finish her sentence,
no one knew they were under investigation yet. Even sat here, her mind was
filled with the events of the past few weeks on board this ship. She was
sifting it over, mulling it, turning it round and looking at it from another
angle. "Just work, I guess." And suddenly she flushed. "How did you know my
name?"

His gaze lowered to the glass in his hands on the table, "You said it to
yourself a moment ago. I wasn't trying to intrude but it was like a nametag
flashing." He swirled the green liquid in the glass several times before
risking a glance back up to meet her gaze. "I'm sorry, I've invaded your
privacy. I shall leave you to your work." Ffej stood and turned to walk away.

"Please don't go!" The words were out before she could stop them. "I mean, I
wasn't being angry, I just didn't know how much of my thoughts you'd read,
that's all. Please, stay?"

Slowly turning back to face her, "Are you sure?" Easing himself slowly down
into the chair next to her this time. "Some people are easier to read than
others. It's not as if I try to." Ffej smiled warmly as he met her glorious
eyes.

Turning away from him slightly, she gazed out of the view port. "I haven't
really met many people on this ship yet." Her eyes caught his again and she
melted inside. "My name's Vevay Davis. It's been a while since I served on a
ship, but it'll be nice when we finally start moving. I hated that station. It
doesn't move anywhere, just stays put. And now I'm babbling, I'm sorry."

His gaze slid to the port and watched the stars with her. "I can sympathize
with part of that. I'm fairly new here myself, and only really know the few
crewmen I've had the pleasure of working with." On impulse he placed his hand
over hers and gave it a squeeze before breaking that momentary contact. "Ship
life has its ups and downs, but I don't think I could stand a station any
longer than shore leave requires..."

His touch had warmed her and she smiled at him. "I have to keep moving, I can't
stand to be in one place for too long. Even have to change ship, seeing the
same people day in, day out drives me mad." She giggled at how ludicrous she
must sound. "I'm sorry, I'm talking way too much. I do that when I'm nervous."

His gaze flicked from the port to her and back, "What's to be nervous about?"

Blushing furiously, she drank from her coffee to hide the foot in her mouth
once again. "Nothing. Just not good at meeting new people. Kind of shy, I
guess."

He leaned back in the chair and extended his legs crossing them at the ankles,
barely brushing her legs in the proccess. "So what department are you in? If I
may make such a bold request."

"Er, do you know what the JAG is?" Well, Cross hadn't specifically told her to
not say anything. And he was so very pretty and nice and charming and... and
she was losing her mind! "Not that that's my department! Oh no, I'm in, erm,
Security, yes, that's what I'm in!"

He glanced sidelong at her quick responce. She was concealing something but to
find out he would have to dive deeper into her mind then mear surface thoughts.
A process he would preffer not to indulge. "Ah, I hear they have quite a bit of
fun now and then."

"Well, I'm new but everyone seems really nice." Raking around in her mind for
the name she'd read earlier, she covered up the delay by taking another sip of
her drink. "Haven't met Sierra yet, but I'm sure he's a sweetie."

Ffej smiled lightly as he recalled the faint memories of Marksbery's vague
comments concerning Sierra, "Yea, uh a real sweetie..." He tossed back the last
of his drink and set it aside. "So, uh." His brow furrowed in mild confusion,
completely unsure where to go from here.

Her PADD suddenly beeped and she cursed. "I'm really sorry, it's my boss, I
mean Sierra, needs me, I mean, I have to report to him. I have to go." She
really didn't want to, she just wanted to stay here with this man and just be.

Ffej stood and bowed slightly to her, "Of course, I understand. If you want,
feel free to stop by any time. It was a pleasure to have met such a lovely
creature as you." Taking her hand he kissed her knuckles lightly.
