Is It Me?
By Anthony J. Manson
Is it me? Or is this place actually quieter than I thought? Today was one of
those rare moments where I find the Blackwell to be quiet and pristine. Orderly
and just rather laid back. It wasn?t so busy today. Or was it just me? It must
be me, because everything looked busy, but it seemed as if the crew had all the
time in the universe to fix or do anything they were told to. Even I felt that
way as I stepped onto the bridge to relieve the night shift officer on the Ops
station and finished whatever she had started.
I woke up this morning, took a shower, changed and headed to the mess hall. It
was on my way there that I found the...atmosphere different. Something light
had changed the setting over the room. At first, as I was getting my coffee, I
thought it was just the room; because it was pretty much empty. The only people
lingering around was a few officers relaxing- probably just off their shift.
But then as I finished my coffee and headed for the bridge, it became evident
throughout my walk.
Definitely me.
I looked over the console, a small repair team of three were finished replacing
an eps conduit on deck 6. I noticed the power had been properly diverted, but
the pervious Ops officer had forgotten to redirect the flow of power. It worked
fine without the redirection, but it creates an in-balance in power
distribution over time. And then people would start to notice. Doing my duties,
time flew by. And I meant flew by.
Great, not only did things feel relaxed, and that time was on everyone?s hands,
time also had to fly by in one blink. It wasn?t until my stomach growled at me
that I realized I needed something to eat. Calling over the second Ops officer,
I headed for the mess hall. Everything suddenly changed again. The feel of the
place felt like the normal times again. That was annoying. When gods of the
heavens play with you like this, you know for a fact that they are bored and
need a little pick me up. Who says they don?t have a sick sense of humor?
I finished my shift a little later than usual. Our night officer had shifts
with another person I didn?t recognize.
No surprise there.
And before I knew it; the day had started again. In another blink. I wonder if
that would happen on the Avalon. It would be...interesting.
Oh yeah, definitely me.
