“Intrigue, Wit, and a Smile”
by Junior Lieutenant Savannah Eckstein,
Ensign Evan Benevente,
& Introducing Ensign Garrett Stevens
"I don't care what it means, my astrological sign isn't going to dictate how and when I meet the next woman I'm going to make love to! It just doesn't happen," Evan Benevente said as he took another spoonful of whatever soup the chef had concocted for the day's meal. It tasted salty and at the same time like every vegetable every imaginable, "you don't believe in that hocus pocus crap, do you?"
Savannah Eckstein swallowed the last mouthful of her broth and placed the spoon in the empty bowl, "I don't really know. For the most part it seems to be completely random and at the same time completely plausible. I don't know; if I could predict when the next time I was going to be with a guy - I'd be so much happier."
"Whatever."
Garrett walked into the lounge, taking a moment to scan the room before walking forward. He neared a table where his sensitive ears picked up the conversation of two officers; they were discussing the merits of future telling in the stars. A smirk crossed his face as he sauntered over to their table, leaning one elbow on the back of an empty chair he looked at both the man and woman sitting there. "You know, that is a lot of truth in the stars, you should heed their warnings," he said in his low baritone voice, a sexy smile spreading his lips.
Savannah looked up and smiled back, "I never said anything about not heeding their warnings - just that I don't believe that they are actually telling our futures, you know?"
"That's the same thing, Savvy."
"Shut up, Evan."
Evan rolled his eyes and looked up at the new ensign. It wasn't someone that he recognized and it probably wasn't a member of security based off that premise. He wore a purple-lined uniform and that meant he was a counselor - or something near thereof. "I'm Evan Benevente, security. This is Savannah Eckstein, security as well."
"Nice to meet both of you," Garrett said, nodding to them. "I'm Garrett Stevens, the Counselor's new assistant," he stated letting his focus turn from Evan to Savannah. "Actually, heeding the warnings of stars and believing they are actually telling our futures are two different things. It's all in the way you look at it, as is everything in this world." Garrett shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly, letting Savannah and Evan do with his words what they wanted.
Evan kicked the chair out to him and motioned with his hand to it, "sit down, man, you're making me nervous standing above me. Assistant, huh? Counselor or are you a secretary?" Evan laughed as he polished off his remaining food and pushed his plate away from himself.
"Ev!" Savannah kicked him under the table and laughed when he visually winced, "That's not very nice at all. Apologize to the man right now. "Sorry about him, he's such a little punk about things like this. You want to hear stories, I'll tell you stories about Mr. Maquis over here."
Evan kicked her back. "Shut it, Savvy."
Garrett couldn't help but let out a chuckle at these two, they were acting like an old married couple; it was cute. "To be honest, I'm not exactly sure. I have a meeting with her in about an hour but I have the feeling I'm going to be more of a secretary then assistant," He shrugged again, leaning back in his chair, looking more comfortable then one could imagine in those chairs. "What about you guys? You full assistants or do you get stuck with the bosses paper work sometimes?"
"I'm an assistant security officer. I have my own set of responsibilities to handle and I have plenty of things to do with Commander Sierra isn't there. I'm sure you'll see more of him if you're working with the counselor. In addition, secretaries can be very important," Evan said the last phrase kind of sarcastically.
"I work as a combat arms officer. I deal with specific instances of inner ship security and on-board defenses," Savannah clasped her hands on the table and stared up at the man in front of her. He mesmerized her and there wasn't any other way to explain her feelings. It almost made her feel like a little girl, "I'm sure I'll be seeing more of you too."
Evan shook his head, "she comes on a bit strong. Kind of like pain after being hit by a bus."
"Secretaries can be very important Evan and I would have no problem being one, you tend to learn more that way," Garrett said, not liking the tone Evan had taken with him or the way in which he was cutting down Savannah but he wasn't going to make an issue of it yet. Instead, Garrett was much more curious to learn about his new boss; at least, to learn about the stuff that isn't in her file. "I'm curious though, why do you say I'll be seeing a lot of the Commander if I'm working with the Counselor, does he need a lot help?" He asked as an eyebrow was raised at Evan and a small smirk on his lips as he winked at Savannah from across the table.
"They're together in the sense of having a relationship..."
"They're sleeping together," Savannah said, cutting Evan off. "Forgive my colleague, he has a habit of beating around the bush and not getting to the point. I guess that could be the reason for his lack of an attention span. As a matter of fact, Commander Sierra is probably one of the most grounded people on board."
Evan smiled, "that's not saying a lot - half the crew is mentally insane."
"Hmm, sleeping with one of the commanders of the ship, interesting," Garrett stated more to himself then the two people he was sitting with. For some reason, he felt that working for this Caine Reilly McKinsely woman wasn't going to dull and if Garrett could judge correctly from Savannah and Evan, there seemed to be some rumors going around about her. "Very interesting," he murmured, but decided to turn the conversation away from his new boss for a while, so instead he grinned one of his more sexy half grins at Savannah, "So how long have you been aboard the USS Avalon?"
"Since her launch," Savannah replied almost immediately.
"It's a long story, but I just got here before this last mission."
Savannah smiled, "what are you doing later, Mr. Stevens?"
Evan rolled his eyes and stood up, "I'll leave you two to yourselves. I have work to do. Savvy, make sure that he's aware of the ride he's going on before you just spring it on him - all right? Mr. Stevens it was a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Until next time." Bowing his head slightly he moved towards the door of the lounge and disappeared.
"He's unique," Savannah said watching him go.
Garrett just raised his eyebrow again, watching Evan leave before turning back to look Savannah. "Please just call me Garrett, you say Mr. Stevens and I expect my grandpa to show up around the corner," he said, chuckling to himself as he pictured his old grandfather still living it up. "And as for later, well that all depends."
"I have this hoverball program I want to try out, but it's designed for a team of two. No one ever wants to play with me, I was thinking that you might wish to join up and play?" Savannah didn't tell him the real reason no one wanted to play with her - she was one of the most aggressive women in Starfleet. Moreover, she had the Admiral's marks to prove it. "Just a harmless game really."
"A harmless game of hoverball? Sounds like it could be fun. I'll of course have to see how much free time I'll have tonight. I still have yet to meet the counselor and I don't know if she will drag me into working or not." Garrett looked over at the time for a moment before turning back and smiling at Savannah. "Unfortunately, I must be heading to the office now for that meeting. Why don't I give you call afterward and we could see about that game?" he asked, leaning in close to her face as he pushed his chair away from the table and stood up. "It was nice meeting you Savannah."
"It was nice meeting you," Savannah said smirking slightly and blushing. "And, Garrett?"
"Yes?" His lips were turned up into that grin again as he looked back at Savannah still sitting at the table.
That devilish smile drifted across her face, "Next time wear something in blue."
