<USS Avalon> "Heirlooms" Cmdr Skyler

"Heirlooms"
Cmdr Skyler

Having beamed back aboard, Skyler still had a few hours until her meeting
with the Captain, she took the time to contemplate situations of late. She was
going to be an Aunt. Her. She had never in her wildest dreams thought she
would ever hear a little voice call her Aunt.

She sat in her quarters wondering how it would feel to hold a child that was
a part of her parents. She couldn't quite fathom that. She had always
thought that she was the last of their family, yet now she not only had a
sister,
her sister was going to have a child. How much of her parents would be in this
child? As a Doctor she knew the statistic's, she also knew that she was not
a full Betazoid nor was Melanie.

What wisdom would she be able to impart unto this child? She wished she
knew. Georgia would be there as always to smother and spoil the child just as
she
had when they were little themselves. She knew in her heart that Melanie
would make a wonderful mother, she took after Celeste in so many ways. Her
caring and thoughtful ways. Her looks, especially the eyes. Her intelligence
and
her ability to get along with just about anyone. Every time she looked into
Melanie's eyes, she could see a part of Celeste.

Getting up she walked over to her closet looking for something she hadn't
looked at for a very, very long time. She found it under a pile of other stuff.

She pulled it out, placing it on the bed where she sat next to it. She ran
her hands over the smooth cover, noticing a few nicks here and there, they
were to be expected after all the years of caring it from place to place.

Carefully, she opened it. It was lined with red velvet and still smelled of
the sachet that had been placed in it by Celeste so many years ago. She
carefully started to take out different items and placed them on the bed, she
then
placed the box on the floor. Looking at the items on the bed flooded her
mind with memories of her childhood, of happier times. These items she would
give to her niece, it even sounded strange to say the word.

On the bed was Soliel's first baby rattle along with her favorite blanket.
Closing her eyes, Skyler could see Soliel in her crib with rattle and blanket,
never letting go of either of them. There was the christening dress that both
Skyler and Soliel had worn, now it could be worn by this child. There were
pictures of the two of them playing near the lake, feeding the fish in the
pond, of picnic's with their parents. There was a picture of Soliel when she
was
only hours old, with Skyler trying to hold her and not drop her. To Skyler
it was her most favorite picture, Celeste and Maddox were also in the picture,
it was the only picture she had of the four of them as a family. Many more
objects were laying on the bed, but Skyler couldn't look at them.

She debated long and hard before returning the picture of the four of them
to the box. Soliel's child would need it now more than she did. She carefully
put everything back into the box, gently closing it. It would be the last
time she would look at these items, as she was now passing them on to the next
generation.

She inserted a card, "Dear Soliel, I am passing on these heirlooms of our
family, so that you may share them with your child. I have held onto them long
enough. It is time for them to be passed on. I pass them on to you with love
and the honor of knowing that you are my sister. I hope they will in some way
help you to tell your child about his/her grandparent's and about you as a
child. It is my gift to you. Love Skyler"

She wrapped the box in delicate paper and had it beamed directly to
Melanie's quarters. With that done, she sat in a chair, closing her eyes and
let  the
silent tears flow down her face.
