<USS Avalon> From Supplies to Surprise

"From Supplies to Surprise"
Log by Lieutenant First Class Isaac Mahler
Chief Medical Officer, USS Avalon NCC-27926-C

Morning again, thought Isaac Mahler as he rose while temporarily on
layover at the space station Polyphemus. Just another day in the life of a
Medical officer destined to live his life on supply ships and freighters. I'll
never find anything adventurous.

He crossed to the replicator and soon was eating a meal -- a Frühstück,
as his mother would call it -- of eggs, bacon, coffee and toast. As soon as
he'd finished polishing it off, he stepped into the shower and, when he
emerged, dressed and headed to his desk, where he opened his prize collection
of
butterflies and moths. How many species, I wonder, might I encounter on my
travels? I only wish they could be kept alive -- that's the only thing that
bothers me about lepidoptery.

The chime rang. "Come." He looked up. "Carl! What are you doing here?"

His brother smiled and handed him a PADD. "I've come with a surprise,
Isaac." He stood with his hands crossed behind his back, rocking from one foot
to the other, barely suppressing a chuckle.

"You don't mean this ... Carl ... " He looked back up at his brother, a
known practical joker on starships and stations. "No, it can't be."

"I'm afraid it's the real thing, Isaac. As the saying goes, you better
get your rear in gear, and I mean now. Admiral Ketchum isn't going to wait
long and I'm here so as to shuttle you over to the Avalon as quickly as
possible
so they don't leave without you."

"But ... but ... Ketchum ... and the Avalon ...?" His jaw dropped.
"CHIEF Medical Officer? Carl, I swear, if this is some joke you're pulling,
you'll
pay for it."

Carl laughed. "All right." He slapped his brother on the back. "So I'll
pay if I'm only kidding you, what do I care? On the other hand," he
continued, picking up Isaac's medical bag and slinging it over his shoulder,
"if this
is the real deal, we'd best finish packing and quickly."

    "All right. You're on."
