Flowers in the Window
*by Ensign Vevay Davis*
"So now we're here and now is fine; so far away from there and there is time
to plant new seeds and watch them grow so there'll be flowers in the window
when we go."
Flowers, dozens upon dozens of them, all different varieties with what
appeared to be a predominance of roses, real ones, flooded her quarters.
No... not her quarters, her old ones, the ones she'd shared with Alexander
Gibson. And the office, not Security but JAG. Every surface was covered in
them... like a florist's shop. *I've heard that before...*
Reaching down, she picked one up, an iris, and brushed its soft petals over
her lips. She loved irises. But who knew that? She hadn't even told Ffej.
There was something elegant and yet strong about them. Their spears stood
tall in their royal garb, at attention at the gate, keeping the bad men from
the door.
*Nodding, "Can we start over? Keith Ketchum", offering his hand. *
*Taking his hand, she grinned. "Vevay Davis, but my friends call me V or
Vev."*
*"A pleasure to make your acquaintance, V", kissing the back of her hand.*
What the... She'd danced, his soft, strong hands holding her, his sweet,
kind eyes never leaving hers. Who... She'd seen him, once, since she'd come
aboard. It was in a corridor and he'd been walking with his wife. They were
so perfect. And yet Vevay had danced with him, she was sure.
Mirrors all around her reflected the myriad worlds of dreams and realities.
Turning, she caught a glimpse of his kiss, gentle on her cheek as a sadness
filled his eyes. *Why so sad, Keith Ketchum?*
Those eyes looked directly at her, holding her rigid where she stood. "When
I first held you I was cold, a melting snowman I was told. But there was no
one there to hold. Before, I swore that I would be alone forever more."
Staring past her, he smiled at something and held out his hand. As she
looked in the same direction, a woman stepped forward, the one she'd seen
him with before, his wife.
A stabbing grief made her flinch. They were so happy and yet... *He'd looked
at me a little like that once, hadn't he?*
As she watched the two lovers walk away, hand in hand, she heard herself
say, "There is no reason to feel bad. But there are many seasons to feel
glad, sad, mad. It's just a bunch of feelings that we've had to hold but I
am here to help you with the load."
"I love you..." A voice behind her made her turn and she looked up into
familiar, shining, azure eyes.
"Are you a dream too?" Stepping up to him, she slipped her arms around his
waist and snuggled in close. "Please don't be a dream."
Wow look at you now
Flowers in the window
It's such a lovely day
And I'm glad you feel the same
As you stand up, out in the crowd
You are one in a million
And I love you so
Let's watch the flowers grow
*Note:* Lyrics in this song are taken from the song "Flowers in the Window"
by Travis on their album "The Invisible Band."
