One of the nurses stepped over to them and smiled as she glanced at the PADD
in her hand. "Lieutenant Li, Doctor Jameson will see you now."
She didn't really wanted to upset poor Melanie, and yes, she told herself,
that she was thinking of her that now, but Vilya had a bit of difficulty
standing up because her center of gravity was so shifted. When she finally
did
stand up straight, she walked as sedately as dignity would allow, following
the
nurse to Anna's office. She offered the blonde woman a bright smile then
patted the curve of her growing belly.
"We're here, Anna," she said simply.
"Wow, so I see, have a seat." Anna stood and offered her friend a hug.
"Can I get you anything?"
Vilya gladly say back down even if she knew it was going to take her forever
to get back up. "We don't need anything," Vilya told her. "I know it's
high time I dragged us in here and Ming might have done the dragging himself
otherwise."
Grinning, Anna ordered a tea from the replicator and returned to her seat.
"Yeah, you've not been having your physicals, we're going to have to do them
all at once, I'm afraid."
Crossing her legs under her desk, Anna sipped at her tea. "Is there
anything specific that you'd like to ask me before we get started?"
"I know hat you told Ming about the side effects of that virus but tell me
the truth. How do you know that there won't be side effects toward the baby?
Now or when he or she grows up?" Vilya asked.
"Let me be frank, I can't be." This was the part that Anna had been
dreading. "Once we start the physical, I will take blood samples from you and
when
your baby is born, I'll take samples from them too. There are tests that I
can run that will tell me the extent of any problems that might occur. Then
when we know the score, I can deal with all the effects from that point on.
All will be well, I promise."
"I will just have to trust in the Prophets and let Ming trust in whoever it
is that he has faith in," Vilya replied. But she brightened up. "But, come,
examine us and tell me how we are. This child kicks like a champion
fighter. Legs like a springball player..."
"Okay, let's get you on a bio bed." Anna smiled at her friend, ushering her
back out into the main Sick Bay area. "Just pop yourself up here," she
said, tapping the bed, "and we'll get started."
Popping herself up onto the bed was something of an effort but she got it
done. Warm brown eyes looked around. There was nothing wrong with a Fleet
Sick Bay but somehow it wasn't what she pictured years ago on Jerrado and
Bajor,
when she and her girlfriends daydreamed about how their lives would be.
Then, there were the ideas of robed midwives and her friends all around her.
Now, she shrugged mentally and told herself it didn't matter. She was happy
to
have Ming there.
As the results from the scans filtered onto the console in front of her,
Anna thought of the data crystal that Ming had given her. This was definitely
going to be one of the more interesting births she'd ever been a part of.
"Well, everything looks fine, all healthy and happy. Would you like to know
the
gender?"
Vilya waved her hand in dismissal. "No, not really. It would ruin one of
the longest running arguments I've ever had. Ming's insisting girl, I'm
insisting boy, and Mac's got a pool going. It isn't up to me but, if it was,
all
I would want is for this child to be healthy. I hear that this will be the
first one born on this ship."
"So I hear, and certainly the first on my shift." Giving Vilya one last
smile, Anna downloaded the results into her file. "Okay, be sure to come
back.
Everything's gonna be fine. Just let me take some blood for tests and you
can go, okay?"
Vilya held out her arm then pushed up her sleeve. "I am so glad they have
the hypos they have now. During the war, when we were on Jerrado, we had
nothing but hypodermic needles. Sounds barbaric but it was what we had to use
for drawing blood or giving shots."
"Oh, trust me, I know. We had to be trained in the use of them at the
Academy, just in case. Just in case of what, I'm not sure, but hey."
Withdrawing
the vial, Anna set it on the side. "That's it, nothing else required. If
you need anything else, to talk or ask me questions, just pop by anytime. If
I'm not here or in my quarters I'll most likely be at Mac's." Blushing,
she turned around hurriedly and grabbed the vial.
Vilya eased herself back onto her feet but she outright stared at the other
woman. A grin spread across her face as he warm brown eyes lit up. "You and
Mac? That's wonderful! That man never said a thing."
Still not looking at her, Anna started fiddling with a scanning device.
"Yes... well... He's gorgeous," she mumbled.
"I'll admit it," Vilya said, her smile making her nose wrinkle even more,
"he's not bad looking if he's got blond hair and doesn't prefer black. I
really had no idea. Somebody should have told me since you know Josh won't."
Finally turning around, Anna's embarrassment was very clear. "It's very
new, we've only been seeing each other for a few days." Grinning, she leaned
against a bio bed, her eyes losing their focus. "He's really the loveliest
man
I've met. And annoying as hell to boot. I don't know what's gonna happen
but it's fun to find out, don't you think? Just so long as I don't end up
with one of those," she pointed at Vilya's belly, "I don't mind."
Vilya almost giggled. "Be careful and you won't," she said brightly. "It
really is wonderful to find out where things go, though, isn't it? When I
think that this child really came about because somebody was hanging his feet
all over my favorite stone bench and reading a real book..."
"That's the way life is, I mean I met Mac in quarantine, if you remember.
Love and a virus, how wonderful." Winking sourly, Anna gave Vilya a quick
hug. "Look after yourself and come back, okay?"
Returning the hug, Vilya told her, "Oh, I will. And you take care of one of
my favorite partners."
