"Family Additions"
Cmdr Skyler, Lt. Vevay Davis & Lt. Georgia Lewis



Skyler and Georgia quietly made their way to sickbay. After hearing Georgia's
news Skyler was not in the best of moods, still she wanted to see her neice. She
felt at times like she and Melanie were growing apart. She wasn't real sure why
although she had her own ideas which she would keep to herself.

As they approached sickbay they noticed a great deal of commotion. She couldn't
sense if Melanie had had the baby or not. In fact she wasn't sensing much at 
all which was worrisome to her.
In a way she had hoped she would be allowed to view or assist with the birth,
but she knew that was not realistic. Her sister had someone new in her life and
it would be that person who would be taking care of her.

Once they entered the main sickbay they looked around until they found a nurse.
"Excuse me nurse, but I am Commander Skyler and I was hoping someone could tell
me the condition of my sister Melanie Redgrave and her baby?"

"I'm sorry but I am not allowed to give out that information. You will need to
talk to your sister or to her partner a Lt. Vevay Davis." With that the nurse
turned around and returned to where she had come from. Now all they had to do
was find Vevay Davis.

Vevay rocked the baby back and forth gently, cooing to her. "Hush little baby
don't say a word," she sang softly, "Momma's gonna buy you a mockingbird."

The world was bright and noisy, but that was ok. It was kind of thrilling in a
freighting way. That was ok too because she felt safe. She was warm, held
tightly, and she knew the voice singing to her, and the scent was comforting.

Grinning down at the beautiful little girl, Vevay continued rocking and singing.
"If that mockingbird won't sing, Momma's gonna buy you a diamond ring."

After being turned away from sickbay, the two women finally made their way to 
the nursery where they found Vevay rocking a baby. Skyler didn't want there to 
be any tension between them as they were, after all, all one family of a sorts.

"Lt, congratulations. I see that Melanie has had her baby. I am truly happy for 
you both."

Georgia looked at the baby and Skyler finally saw a smile on her face. "She is 
beautiful Ma'am. Do you mind if I hold her just for a minute or two? I 
will...be leaving soon and it would mean so much?"

Skyler stood by and watched the baby, her heart beat a little faster knowing 
that in some bizzare way this child was also a part of her. Granted a distant 
part, but it was her niece.

"I am going to take a stab and guess you named her Grace, correct? It's a 
beautiful name."

"I haven't named her," Vevay said softly, "Mel did." She tentativey offered the 
baby to Georgia.

With some hesitation Georgia accepted the child into her arms. She was so small 
yet so beautiful. "You are lucky to have this chile in your life. She is a 
blessing."

She gently rocked her and smiled at Skyler, "It's almost like I was rocking 
both you and Melanie again. It is a good feeling." Not wanting to be over 
bearing she handed the child back to Vevay.

"I know you will take good care of this child and of Melanie. I hope you will 
send pictures from time to time?"

Skyler stood off to the side taking everything in, remembering how it felt to 
be held in Georgia's arms when she was a child. This child was going to be in 
good hands.

"If Mel wants," Vevay said carefully, cuddling the baby. She stared at the two 
women, wondering what she was expected to do, whether there was some kind of 
ceremony or something that needed doing. "I'm, er, not exactly knowledgable 
about families and such."

Looking at Vevay, Skyler noted some hesitation or something from Vevay. She 
watched how she held and rocked the baby and could see that she already loved 
her neice.

"You really don't have to know a great deal. As far as I am concerned I only 
have one question? Do you love Melanie and this baby? If so then the three of 
you will make a wonderful family. You are already bonding with Grace which is 
good. I don't have much experience with families myself. It's only been 
recently that I found out Melanie was my sister. I thought Georgia and her 
husband were the closest thing to a family I had until Melanie appeared. You 
have nothing to fear or worry about from me as I have no intentions on coming 
between the two of you. As long as you are all happy that is all that matters."

Skyler and Georgia took on last look at both Vevay and Grace and smiled. "I 
have a meeting to get to so I will leave you and Grace to get better aquainted. 
I hope you don't mind if Georgia sticks around until Melanie wakes up. I am 
sure she would want to say good-bye."

"Yes Skyler, I would likes to say good-bye to Melanie. Is that okay with you 
Lieutenant?"

"Um... yeah, I guess," Vevay said with a shrug.

Skyler gave Georgia a quick hug and watched as she sat in a corner out of the 
way of the baby and Vevay. She took one last look and then left for her so 
called meeting. She knew that Melanie would do just fine with her baby and this 
new partner of hers. She was happy for her. Once again life was changing all 
around. Some for the better, some not so.
