<USS Avalon> "Eyes and a Smile" Jr. Lt. Marksbury & Jr. Lt. Monroe

Eyes and a Smile

by Junior Lt. Elissabeth Marksbury and Junior Lt. James Monroe

Monroe walked around deck 5, on his way to deck 8. But since he had some time,
he decided a little exploring would be good; having never been on a starship
since his academy days. So far, he passed sickbay, but then as he turned the
corner, he saw a rather petite woman with short blondish hair looking around.
She looked a little lost from the way she glanced at her choice of directions.
Why not?, he thought as he approached her, "Hi, you seem a little lost. Need
some help?"

Shaking her head, she replied, "I'm not lost. I'm on deck five, section three.
I was on my way...I mean, think I was going...I think I've lost something. But
I don't remember what I was looking for." Her brows crinkled in confusion and
obvious frustration. Monroe noticed her light green eyes, deep in thought.
Nice, he thought.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude," she smiled. "I'm Lissi. Junior Lt.
Marksbury. Elissabeth. Sorry. I must sound really befuddled, I'm being so
unprofessional." Her eyes twinkled when she smiled. She extended her hand. "I
just transferred here. And you are?" Her manner was very friendly and she
instantly seemed to put Monroe at ease.

Monroe shook her hand, which she gave a firm grip. Not many did that, and
Monroe instinctively liked her. "I'm Junior Lt. James Monroe." He smiled, "And
yeah- it's okay, I had the same trouble when I got on board. Where exactly are
you going?"

"You know, it's the funniest thing. I was going to see the doctor for an
initial check up and she wasn't in, so obviously I was heading back to my
quarters or something. All the sudden I just felt like I was forgetting
something - or had lost something. Oh well, must not have been important," she
laughed a quiet, but delightful laugh. "Where were you going? Maybe we can
walk together? I don't know anyone here yet. Well, I met Commander Sierra, but
I mean, anyone of my rank," she grinned. It was quite cute.

Monroe smiled a little, "Actually, I'm on my way to Deck eight, I'm reporting
to a," he hesitated to the name a little since he wasn't used to it just yet,
"Commander Karg. If you're headed that way, let's go." They started walking,
and Monroe felt like an idiot being quiet, "So..."

"So...." Lissi replied, letting it dangle. The ackwardness of the situation was
a bit unnerving. "You know, I think I converse much better over wine." She
giggled slightly, but not in an immature way. It was charming.

Monroe lightly chuckled, "I talk better than this, but what can I say, you've
got beautiful eyes." They turned the corner, heading towards the turbolift.

Lissi dipped her eyes quickly in response to James' comment. There was
something about him that seemed familiar, and yet, she was sure if she'd met
someone with that nice of a smile she would've remembered. He kinda made her
feel a little melty around the knees when he looked at her like that. She was
usually so self-confident and now one little compliment had her blushing like a
school girl!

"I don't think that anyone's ever said that before," she admittted, still not
looking him in the eye.

Monroe smiled, "Maybe they need to pay more attention."

Lissi didn't say anything as they stepped into the lift. She took a deep
breath. "Deck 8" she told the computer. Then regaining her composure, she
turned to James, "I'm sorry, you must think I'm totally inept." She stared into
his eyes, gaging his reaction. "You see, I've spent a lot of time training
and...well, not had much of a personal life. I just...I'm just not any good at
this!" she gave a nervous little laugh, but didn't avert her gaze.

Monroe nodded not loosing her eye contact. , "I get ya. Being in security
sometimes takes most of your life. Until I met you, all I knew was this Ops
officer- when I got lost."

"Before that, I was... in a team." Monroe inwardly yelled at himself for having
slipped. He was better than that. One woman comes around, and he slipped. It
was his hope that she would just leave it at that.

Lissi could sense his uneasiness at perhaps saying too much. She could tell he
was suddenly distracted, not feeling the penetration of his gaze into hers any
longer. She slightly furrowed her brows, but figured if he wanted to elaborate
that he would. Afterall, it wasn't like she didn't have secrets of her own. She
wanted to put him at ease, now feeling the tension that was beginning to build
once again. The turbolift opened to deck 8 and they both stepped out. "Have you
had anything to eat recently?" she innocently asked. "I mean, since we both
don't really know anyone else...Well, we do seem to have a job in common. Maybe
we can talk about weapons and training or something..." she let the sentence
trail off, feeling like a total idiot. What has come over me?, she wondered.

Monroe beamed a little in relief, as the tension went away pretty quickly. He
took the offer, "Well not yet. But say... lunch we could meet at the crew
lounge hall."

"I would really like that, James," she said, trying out his name for the first
time. It seemed oddly familiar on her tongue.

"Well," Monroe shifted his head slightly, "I go this way. It's a pleasure to
meet you, Lissi."

"You too," she said quietly, as Monroe walked away. She was suddenly looking
quite forward to lunch.
