<USS Avalon> Engineering A Relationship

"Engineering A Relationship"
Lt. K'etrall Acting CENG & Ensign Victoria MacGivern

K'etrall decided that she should probably check on the engines one more
time. She knew that there would be new crew arriving she just didn't know
when.
She hoped she would be getting some help in engineering, if not she would
continue on as best she could.

Walking into the main engineering she was greeted with the smell of new
engines. Engines that had yet to need repair or undergone undue stress. These
engines were humming, almost purring actually. It was a sound that was long
overdue. As she progressed further into the room she noticed someone at one of
the consoles. She had no idea who it was, as no one had bothered to report in
yet.
The half Klingon engineer meandered over to the console and quietly stood
behind whom ever was at the console. She waited for the person to turn around
and notice her. It would be interesting to see this persons reaction. So she
waited.
Victoriaâs attention was very much so intent on the Warp Propulsion layout
she was watching on the console screen at the time, up until she heard someone
come to a stop behind her. She had a feeling that she had been at the console
going over the ships specifications, and general system status for too long.
She leaned back in her chair, and stretched her arms out wide. "What can I
do for ya!" she stated quietly as she craned her body around in the swiveling
chair to meet this new person.
Standing behind the stranger Lieutenant K'etrall had her arms crossed against
her chest and was scowling. "Well, first of all you can stand when talking
to a superior officer. Then you can tell me what you are doing in
engineering?"
K'etrall stood waiting for the stranger to stand as she had been told to do.
Her Betazoid senses were telling her that this person was not one to take
orders easily. She also got the impression that this person thought she could
do
whatever she wanted, whenever she wanted. "Any time now!! I don't have all
day."
Victoria couldn't help but smirk at the woman as she rose from the chair.
"You must be the Chief!" she stated flatly. It almost seemed as if she was
sizing the woman up for a fight. "A Klingon Chief even." she said and smiled.
She
nodded as if in agreement with some random thought in her head. "I would be
Ensign MacGivern ma'am." she stood a little straighter. "I couldn't wait to
get my hands on these babies, so I was compelled to come and get a look, and
when I got here it was so quiet, and peaceful." She looked around almost as if
in a dream world. "I had to look further." her eyes came back to meet the
woman's. "I apologize for not checking in right away. After the start of the
day, I needed a pick me up. I hope you wont take it too personally." she
smiled
in a hopeful sort of way.
K'etrall could tell that the woman who was claiming to be one of the new
engineers was going to be a problem. She wasn't worried though. She'd had her
share of insubordinates who tried to see how far they could go. She would
handle this one as well.
"I don't take things personally, if I did you wouldn't be standing there
smirking like you are. These "babies" as you call them are delicate machines.
Not something to be manhandled just because you feel like it. If you need a
pick me up I suggest you get it from somewhere else. When you are here, you
will
be working. You will be doing as I say, when I say it. Do you understand
Ensign MacGivern or do I need to explain it more clearly to you? Your first
act
should have been to report into me. Not fondle the engine consoles."
Pausing K'etrall moved around so she was standing next to the Ensign who was
a head shorter than K'etrall. "You are the one from the brig on Izar. You
think yourself a fighter do you? Perhaps we will have to test that theory in
the
holodeck. For now I want a full report on what you have learned about these
engines."
Victoria stared at the woman a moment, contemplating what she said, but
wasn't sure which direction she thought the last open ended statement was.
Clearly her new boss was not going to understand her at the moment, but she
would have to find a common ground at some point. She sighed an inward sigh,
and nodded. "Alright, well the engine's are new, so they are in good
condition. I think with some time, some learning there ins and outs, we can
make them
better. In time of course." she paused to consider her next few words.
"These things are unique just like with each person. They require time to
see how they are going to settle into there bolts. We have to learn the quirks
of each engine, and then make them happy by giving them the attention they so
deserve." she smiled. "After all they are what keep us going, and in most
cases alive."
"You have an interesting perception on things don't you Ensign? I actually
wanted a full report on the status of the engines. Just incase for some odd
reason the Admiral decides he wants to test them out. I can see where your
evaluation could relate to other situations as well. You aren't possibly using
our relationship or lack of one as inspiration for your comments are you?"
Watching the woman, K'etrall sensed something but she wasn't sure what. It
was going to take some time to figure her out. In the meantime she would have
to keep her busy and out of the brig. She had a feeling that in itself was
going to be a job all by itself.
Victoria smiled warmly at the woman. "Inspiration can come from many things
ma'am. Yes, I would say so. I might come off as the wrong kind of person to
most people, I am not much of a people person in some situations, however when
it comes to my work I am as dedicated as ever. I love my job, which is
probably the only reason I've made it this far." she pondered a moment. "As
for my
prior behavior, I was standing up for something I believed was wrong.
Granted It wound me up in the brig, but if I didn't stand up for what I
believed in
at the time, an injustice to another would have been committed and it would
have given that man leave to say and do as he continued." she spoke was if
she had a bad taste in her mouth. "I hate men like that!" she said under her
breath.
She looked up. "I have a bit of an anger issue!" she smiled. "Something I
think a Klingon could relate too." she grinned a bit more. "I know it gets me
into trouble. It has something to do with the red hair and the father I had as
a kid." she paused a moment going quiet.
"The engine's ma'am, are as far as my perusing in tip top shape for a ship
just off the construction yard. I'm actually surprised, they usually have some
bumps and issues. I am willing to bet whatever is going to come will show up
when we get her going." she blinked away some unwanted emotion and looked
back up at her new comrade.
Listening intently to what Victoria was saying,K'etrall was becoming
intrigued with this woman. "Yes, anger is something a Klingon would know
something
about. It's what got me this scar on my face. However, while you are working
under my command you will do your best to control your anger. I won't tolerate
any fights in engineering. Also standing up for what you believe in is an
admirable trait. Something I can relate to."
Something was bugging the Chief Engineer. She didn't know what it was but it
was something she hadn't felt in some time. Pushing the thought out of her
head, at least temporarily, she returned her gaze to Victoria. "I highly doubt
that your red hair has anything to do with your anger issues. However if you
feel the need to work on those issues I would be more than willing to aide
you. Perhaps a workout in the holodeck sometime. It usually takes care of my
anger at least for a while."
Victoria didn't really know what to say to that, it had been a while since
she had been close enough to people or let people in close enough to be almost
a friend. She went through most of the Academy staying as far away from
everyone she could. Most of the time they had some sort of mark to remember
her
by. Should she allow another person to get close, the last one didn't go so
well. "Its something to consider." she said, a bit of nervousness and
hesitation in her voice, but she smiled. "So what's on the agenda for work. Do
we have
anything specific to work out before we do get under way?" she was
attempting to shift the conversation, she could feel some old feelings welling
up in
her that she didn't want to. She didn't want to hurt again. But for some
reason she felt she could almost relate to this person whom she didn't even
know.
Who knows what the future would hold.
