<USS Avalon> End to Questioning

End to Questioning
by. Lieutenant JG Caine Reilly McKinsley & Ensign Mehdi Idrys

Caine walked into her office and throw the two PADDs she was carrying onto her
desk. Ensign Mehdi Idrys was supposed to arrive any minute now and she felt
slightly frazzled, having slept late, then making rounds to see how certain
people on the ship were doing. Caine flopped down in her chair to catch her
breath and wait for the good doctor.

Idrys wasn't looking forward to this but he knew the investigation had to go
forward. He arrived at the Counselor's office, pressed the chime, and waited.

?Come in,? Caine called as she stood to meet her visitor.

He walked in and nodded. "Counselor. I hope this isn't a bad time." He smiled
nervously.

?Ohh not at all, please come in, have a seat. Would you like something to eat
or drink?? she asked as she moved over to her replicator to get herself a mug
of hot tea and anything Idrys would want.

"Tea would be nice, thank you," replied Idrys, sitting down. "So how is the
investigation going?"

Caine handed him his tea and sat down on one of her many chairs across from
him. ?It seems to be going well. Almost finished with it actually and once
I?m done questioning people, then it?s completely out of my hands and in the
hands of the captain. How have you been enjoying your service aboard this ship
so far??

Idrys sipped at the tea for a moment. "It's been quite interesting, that's for
sure," he replied. "I haven't been here very long and I've had some unusual
patients."

?Unusual patients?? she asked raising an eyebrow. ?Well I guess that is to be
expected anywhere but for me, the interesting ones are my favorite, they stick
out in my mind more and I seem to end up having a better relationship with
them. Of course our interesting patients have very different problems and I
just realized I?m rambling, please forgive me, I have been doing that a lot
lately.? Caine felt kinda stupid now but since her talk with Javan, she had
been much freer with everything, including her speech. ?But trust me, the
longer your on this ship, the more interesting things become.?

He nodded. "I'd agree. There was that Junior Lieutenant from Engineering,
K'Etrall, who was burned within an inch of her life. Damned lucky we were able
to save her, and also stubborn and determined." He paused. "And then there was
Commander Skyler herself. I honestly had no idea I'd be introduced to her when
the signal went off that I had to go down and check on someone who had just
been placed in the brig." He laughed. "I honestly thought it would turn out to
be some rowdy Security officer who'd gotten involved in a drunken brawl." He
shrugged and shook his head.

Caine laughed lightly at the idea of the security officers in the brig for a
drunken brawl. ?I think we have actually had to though someone in the brig for
that, but I?m not sure. Though speaking of Commander Skyler, I understand you
have gone to visit her in her quarters since her confinement, how has that
been?? Caine knew already the rumor of the two of them being involved but she
was not going to bring it up unless Idrys did, it wasn?t her place to push into
his life like that just yet.

Inwardly he bristled but he refused to show irritation. "She has requested my
company. I have provided it for her. Honestly I don't understand what this is
all about ... what the relevance of this is, Counselor," said Idrys.

Caine felt him pull away and put a brick wall up, so she figured that she might
as well get down to business. ?I meant no offense, I was just seeing how it
went, kind of like, seeing how you were adapting and such to the ship and I am
glad to see you have already made friends with people aboard. I always worry
about that when new people join, if they will make good friends or not. But I
did have a purpose for calling you to my office today. Since you were the one
to let the commander out of the brig, you are involved in this investigation
whether you want to be or not. So what I need you to do is just tell me what
happened that led to your letting Commander Skyler out of her cell and if there
is anything you know or an opinion you have that is at all relevant to the
investigation. So if you would just start by telling me what happened that
would be great.? Caine hated being about business all the time, it made her
feel like she wasn?t doing her job to the best of her abilities but in this
case, she needed to be about business. So she grabbed a PADD off her desk and
prepared to jot down whatever it was that Ensign Idrys would have to say.

He nodded. "Very well, this is what happened as best I can remember. I was
going through inventory that day when a signal went off that indicated someone
had arrived in the brig. I had to leave and see who it was because medical
procedure dictates that each new arrival in the brig be examined for any
illnesses, medical needs and the like. So imagine my surprise to see the
ship's Executive Officer there. She wasn't happy to be there and I just asked
her to humor me by telling me what had happened. She gave me her account of
what had happened. When she came to the end of it, I thought it was strange
that she had been placed under arrest and relieved of command, for two reasons:
one, that she was higher up in the chain of command than the officer who had
had her arrested; and two, that when an officer in charge of the bridge is
relieved of duty, Starfleet orders require that the Chief Medical Officer
supply evidence of said officer's inability to command, backed up by a physical
and psychiatric evaluation. No such evidence existed, so I released her on the
absence of that."

Caine nodded and made notes of what he said. ?Okay, thank you. Do you have
any opinions or thoughts about the situation that you would like for me to tell
the captain??

He shook his head. "No, actually. That's just the story as it basically is from
my end. I can only hope it helps to push the investigation to a successful
close." He smiled.

?I hope so as well,? Caine said softly. ?Thank you though, for your
assistance, it should hopefully help the investigation out.? Caine had hoped
for more information that she might be able to give Captain Ketchum, but she
knew not to expect too much.

"You are most welcome," replied Idrys.

Caine watched as ensign Idrys left her office. Silently, she packed up the
PADDs with the rest of the information she had gathered from the investigation
and headed to Captain Ketchum?s office.
