<USS Avalon> Cure for the Cure

Cure for the Cure
Felicity Roan

Felicity had been watching the ensuing chaos that was Sickbay and waited for
the opportune moment to offer her assistance. She wanted to give Anna a
chance to find a cure to the virus herself. She remembered how, as a young
officer she had been given a similar opportunity.
Alas, seeing that Anna had found the cure, but with an unanticipated
side-effect, blindness, Felicity decided that she should lend an assist. She
took
what Anna had administered and analysed its structure until she could
determine what had caused the blindness. One of the strands of the virus was
branching off into the nervous system, which lead to the blindness. Felicity
blocked that routing and then ran several tests to ensure the accuracy. It
was a
clever virus, Felicity concluded, and was impressed by the creator, but
dismayed at the potential devastating effects.
After several hours of tests, Felicity concluded she was prepared to
administer it on the crew. She started with Anna and then once her recovery
was
pronounced, she proceeded to administer to the other crew members. It was
touch
and go for several hours, but eventually, the infected crew seemed to
recover without further side-effects appearing.
There was a curious reaction from Elijah, which Felicity had to investigate
further while he was in stasis. She had to study his blood cultures with the
strains of the virus. He showed signs of the virus in his bloodstream, but
it was completely inert and it could not transmit it to anyone else. It was
an immunity of some sort to the virus. Upon further study, Felicity
discovered that this immunity stemmed from an increased level of
immunosuppressant,
somewhere in the neighborhood of three times the normal levels in Terran
humans. It was curious, but Felicity decided the best course of action would
be
to release him from quarantine, more for his protection than that of the rest
of the crew. Felicity prescribed an antibiotic to help him expunge this
virus from his bloodstream in a gradual manner. Besides, Felicity knew with
the
upcoming mission, Avalon would need as much of her crew healthy as possible.
Watching the last of the infected crew retreat out of Sickbay, Felicity felt
a sense of relief and accomplishment. She was proud of the work that Anna
had started and was glad to have been able to treat the remaining crew
without incident. Grabbing her dinner, she retreated to her lab to file the
virus
away with the rest.
