<USS Avalon> "Crowning Glory"

"Crowning Glory"
By. Lt. First Class Melanie Redgrave

Melanie sat in the kitchen looking over the display on the small computer
screen as she crewed on the end of a pen. She was trying to work out the
day’s
agenda and was starting to remember why she hated trying to take the tube
anywhere. The times never linked up with what she had planned.

“Melanie dear your not a billy goat.” Juliana scolded as she walked in from

the garden.

For a moment Melanie wasn’t sure what her mother was talking about but then
suddenly put the pen down as she blushed.

Juliana walked over to her daughter and looked over her shoulder. “Your
planning on going to Manchester?”

Melanie nodded. “I’m taking Eli to a football match. Tomorrow we have opera

tickets. Saturday we‘re going to the clubs in London and then Sunday is a
matinee for one of the shows on the west end and an dinner and dancing at
King‘s
 Court.”

“Busy weekend.” Juliana laughed. She liked the look in her daughter’s
eyes
when she spoke of the young man. She hadn’t seen that look since T’Arah.
“So
I take it you and Elijah and serious?”

Melanie looked up from the computer screen with a baffled look on her face. “
We’re dating. He asked me to be his girlfriend. I guess that’s serious.”

Juliana just smiled. “You sound unsure.”

“I just don’t want to rush anything, you know.” Melanie said as she went
back to making out her plans. “I mean I haven’t been in a relationship
since T’
Arah, and we see how well that went.”

The tea kettle on the stove whistled and Juliana went about preparing tea
for them both. “Yes. You have a wonderful friend who loves you completely. A
romantic relationship between you and T’Arah would have never lasted long.
You
my love are to expressive to be romantically involved with a Vulcan. Even one
like T’Arah.”

Melanie rolled her eyes, and then sighed. “I’m no good at relationships.
I’
m scared to death of blowing this.”

“Until now you’ve just been picking the wrong people. T’Arah came close,
but I think Elijah might just come the closest to who you need to make you
happy.”

A curtain of long dark hair parted as Melanie looked up at her mother. “How
can you be so sure?”

Juliana smiled. “Do you remember what I told you when you first asked me
about falling in love?”

“Kinda.” Melanie admitted sheepishly.

“I said, some girls are far, some are jolly and fit, some have well breed
aire or a well honed wit. Each one’s a jewel,” Juliana began as she tapped
Melanie on the noise. “with a signaler shine, a work of art with it’s own
rare
design.”

Melanie smiled as she watched her mother place a cup of tea in front of her
and the sit across the island on the other stool. “Dear little girl, you are
terribly blessed, but it’s your heart of gold I love the best. And that will
be your crowning glory your whole life though, it’ll always be your crowning
glory, the most glorious part of you.” Juliana sipped her tea and looked at
Melanie with a crooked smile. “Any of this coming back to you?”

Melanie laughed. “Yes, but keep going, get to the part where you talk about
the guys.”

Juliana laughed. “If you know what I’m going to say why do I need to say
it?
”

“I need a refresher?”

Juliana shook her head and laughed. It was a musical sound that reminded
Melanie of wind chimes. “Some boys can waltz, strike an elegant pose. Some
seem
to have no faults, but we never like those. He’ll praise your eyes, your
melodious laugh, call you more lovely then other’s by half.”

Melanie couldn’t help but roll her eyes and laugh. Her mother could be so
corny sometimes, but then her mother’s demeanor became a little more serious.

“The one who’s right will be honest and true and prize your heart of gold
the way I do. He’ll know that that will be your crowning glory your whole
life
thought. Your love will see that it’s your crowning glory, the most glorious
part of you.”

“And you think that’s Elijah?” Melanie asked as she bit the corner of her

bottom lip.

Juliana looked at her daughter for a long moment. “Only time with him will
tell.”

Melanie thought about it and nodded. The best part about starting a new
relationship was getting to know each other and building something real. She
smiled as she looked at her mother. “You know your really good at that.”

“At what pet?”

Melanie got up off her stool and walked over to her mother. She wrapped her
arms around the older woman and hugged her tightly. “Being my mum.”

** If part of this log seemed to ring a bell it's because I so borrowed most
of the conversation from the song "Your Crowing Glory" which appears on the
Princess Diaries 2 soundtrack. It's the song that Julia Andrews did with
Raven. It marked the first time the amazing Ms. Andrews has sung in a film
since
her throat surgery in 1998. This is what happens when you have a song on
repeat while attempting to write a log where one of the characters is loosely
based on pre-mentioned performing goddess.**
