<USS Avalon> "Comparing the Scans"

"Comparing the Scans"
Dr. Alexis Cazook

Alexis took the first scan, laid it out on the table and with her magnifying
glass went over the scan with a fine tooth comb. Ever since she had begun to
treat Cmdr. Marksbury she had done brain scans on each visit or physical.
Now she needed to use those scans to find out what was causing the headaches
to
return, the nosebleeds, and now some short term memory loss.

She had made the hard copies of the scans similar to transparencies, so when
laid one on the other they should all match up, if nothing was wrong. Taking
the second scan she placed it on top of the first. At first glance with the
naked eye she could see no changes. However when she looked more closely with
the magnifying glass, she could see that the two scans did not line up
accordingly. They were off by only a few millimeter's if that but they were
still
off.

She continued this process with each scan and with each scan they were off
from the previous one. They were all off in the same region of the brain, but
the distance from the first scan to the last scan was more than a millimeter.
She also noticed an area in the brain that had changed completely from all
previous scans. This was the part of the brain that would cause one to lose or
have difficulty with short term memory. Just as she had described.

Alexis wasn't the old fuddy duddy doctor that everyone thought she was. She
knew something was going on with Cmdr. Marksbury, something that she had to
admit she couldn't fix. She could treat the symptoms, but as for treating the
cause it appeared beyond her grasp. She had a feeling that once she sent her
results to Dr. Brookman he too would be unable to figure out what exactly was
going on.

In the back of her mind she thought she had an idea but she had no proof.
All she could do for now was treat the symptoms. Her main concern was the
amount
of painkillers that the Cmdr. was requiring. There was a point when she
would either become addicted to the pain killers or they would quit working
altogether. When she reached that point she wasn't sure what she would be able
to
do for the Cmdr.

She gathered up all her scans, told the computer to erase the program, then
with a hurried step, made her way back to her office. She put the scans back
in the locked file, then filled out a report detailing what was going on and
sent it off via subspace to Dr. Brookman. The Avalon would be leaving soon so
it would be up to her to somehow help Commander Marksbury.
