"Close Call"
Melanie Redgrave, Vevay Davis, Anna McEntire
Blood chilling fear and panic engulfed her while she lay on the biobed. The
cramping had grown worse but was starting to less as whatever the doctor had
given her had started to spread through her body. Angry, frightened tears were
squeezed from her eyes as Melanie clinched them closed. This wasn't happening,
she wasn't laying there with her baby's life in danger. She heard voices around
her, Anna's, the little Bajoran nurse's who had called for Vevay, but they
seemed so far away to her.
Vevay.
Another prick of something to her neck and more orders being barked out. This
had to all be just a nightmare and she was going to wake up soon with Vevay's
arms around her.
God I'm so scared. I can't lose her.
Two strides in and Vevay was at Melanie's side. She placed her hand on her
love's shoulder, squeezing tightly. "I'm here, I'm here. Everything's alright."
"Something's wrong." Melanie said softly, timidly. "I can't lose her."
Vevay's eyes lifted to where Anna was working studiously on a console. "What's
wrong?"
"We're working on it," was all the Australian doctor would say as she put
another hypo to Melanie's neck and pumped her with more medication.
"I'm sorry." Melanie said as she finally opened her eyes and looked up at her
lover. "I'm so sorry."
"What for?" Vevay whispered, rubbing Mel's arm gently. "You've done nothing
wrong."
Tears soaked the dark hair around Melanie's face. "I wasn't careful." She
replied. "I let myself get stressed and my blood pressure went up. I wasn't
careful."
"Careful?" Vevay asked softly.
"I shouldn't have gotten so upset." Melanie replied, her vision no longer
blurred from her blood pressure but from her tears. "I shouldn't have let them
get to me."
"Who?"
Melanie fought not to let herself get upset over it all again. Closing her eyes
she kept her voice soft, her hand reaching for Vevay's. "Georgia and Skyler
this morning, Eli this afternoon. I should have handled it all better."
Holding Melanie's hand tightly, Vevay shook her head. "They all should have
known better than to get you upset."
"It wasn't about me though." Melanie sighed "Georgia, Elijah, it was about them
and how they felt."
Vevay took a very deep breath, not allowing herself to get upset over this.
That was for later when she could rail and scream at someone. Instead, she just
rubbed Mel's arm. "But it's all done now, just relax. No need to deal with the
stupid people anymore."
Despite the pain, the fear, the unknown out come, there was something good in
it all. "I told him, Vevay. It's finally all done."
Sitting on the edge of the bed, Vevay smothered her sudden fear and smiled
warmly at Mel. "I'm glad."
Melanie tried her best to smile as she clung to Vevay's hand as if she were a
life line. "You can't get rid of me now."
"Don't want to," Vevay said, putting as much certainty as she could into her
words.
Bringing Vevay's hand to her mouth, Melanie kissed it softly before once again
clinging to it.
"I do love you," Vevay said. Then she lifted her eyes to Anna again. "Is she..."
"Just fine," Anna told them with a smile. "Don't worry, the baby is fine, and
so is Mum."
New tears dampened Melanie's cheeks as she squeezed Vevay's hand. "I love you
too." She whispered as she placed both their hands on her stomach. "I promise
to be more careful. I won't let myself get so upset."
"Nope," Anna said carefully, "you won't. I'm ordering bedrest, you need to stay
as immobile as possible. I hear you have a nanny already, see if she can help
you out more?"
Melanie looked like a teenager who'd just been grounded for two months.
"Bedrest?"
"Yes," Anna affirmed. "If you don't, I'll have to sedate you."
"Ok bedrest it is." Melanie replied as she tried to sit up. "So I just lay
there? I can't do anything?"
"You can do what you like, as long as you stay in bed," Anna said evenly.
"Just..." she eyed Vevay, a mischievous smile on her face, "nothing too
strenuous, eh?"
Melanie turned a lovely shade of pink and couldn't help but smile.
Vevay just laughed, her own cheeks going deep red. "I'll be sure to relax you,
my love."
The light pink grew darker as Melanie looked into Vevay's eyes. "I think she
means that's what we'll have to scale down on, love."
Sniggering softly, Vevay just let a smirk cross her face. "I think I can manage
something toned down."
Dark pink was now scarlet red. Turning back to look at Anna she cleared her
suddenly dry throat. "Is there anything else I need to do?"
"Just keep taking the meds," Anna said as she offered Mel her hand. "Keep away
from anything stressful and don't wear yourself out. Next time this happens
you're likely to go into labour and could end up blacking out."
Melanie took Anna's hand and eased off the bed. She wasn't about to do anything
that could put her baby at risk, even if that meant shutting herself away from
the world. "Looks like I'm starting my maternity leave a little sooner then
expected."
"Do you need help getting back to your cabin?" the doctor asked.
"Thanks but I think my personal body guard can handle it." Melanie answered as
she took Vevay's hand. Then she frowned as she look at the other pregnant
woman. "I'll have to miss the rest of the prenatal classes."
"It's okay, you can do them at home," Anna told her. "They're all on the
computer. Your... bodyguard can do them with you."
Melanie nodded as she looked at Vevay and smiled. "She's going to be in the
room with me." Then she sighed as she turned back to look at Anna. "As will as
Eli if he's here, if that's ok?"
"Only if it's okay with you," Anna said. "If it causes you stress then no."
"My ex-fiancée, father of my daughter and the love of my life, mother to my
daughter both in the same room while I'm screaming my head off and trying to
push a rather large object from a rather small hole." Melanie shook her head.
"Nope no way that'll be stressful."
"Then no way is he coming in." Anna shrugged. "Men will be kept out, it's a
simple rule."
Melanie laughed as she looked down at the doctor's rather large belly. "And who
will be telling that to the Lieutenant?"
"Me," Anna said frankly. "Though my doctor's a man so it can't really apply."
"But if you don't let him in it'll ruin the betting pool." Melanie teased,
feeling a hell of a lot better then she did an hour ago, though she was still
scared about everything.
"And how's that?" Anna asked, her eyebrow raised.
Melanie laughed. "If he's not in there with you how's he suppose to pass out?"
To that, Anna burst out laughing. "Mac? Pass out? Not a chance!"
"The biggest most macho men are often the ones who pass out cold at the first
real contraction once your legs are in those stirrups." Her voice was deadpan
but her green eyes danced.
"And my husband is not going to pass out," Anna said with a nod. "He's not
getting in the room so he can't."
Melanie nodded and smirked. "Looks like Ensign Garrity wins the pool then."
"That I have no issue with, she shares her winnings with me." Anna winked then
ushered Mel and Vevay out. "Go on, shooo."
It felt good to laugh after what she'd just been through. Once they were in the
hall, Melanie pulled Vevay's arm around herself and leaned softly into her.
"Take us home, love."
