<USS Avalon> Checking In

"Checking In"
Log by Lieutenant First Class Isaac Mahler
Chief Medical Officer, USS Avalon NCC-27926-C

It was business as usual in Sickbay with personnel making rounds, taking
inventory, scheduling appointments, treating minor injuries and the like.

For Nurses Rayna Marim and Aida t'Aral, however, this was not just any
day. They were about to meet a new Chief Medical Officer, and he had a good
reputation. They were each wondering if he would turn out to be the best
material to carry on the fine Avalon tradition. The day was quite hectic for
them.

"When do you suppose he'll be here, Ai?"

"Search me, Ray. He'd better get his keester over here soon, or Admiral
Ketchum is going to tell the Helm officer to move out of Spacedock without
him."

"Yeah, now wouldn't that be a sight!"

    "Hee hee."

"You're right, it would be. Tell me ... are you off duty or on duty?"

    "Doctor! I mean, we didn't ... I mean ..."

Mahler chuckled and made a dismissive gesture as he entered the central
area of Sickbay. "No need to worry. I suppose you already know who I am ...
Doctor Isaac Mahler, the new Chief Medical Officer here. And you ladies would
be ... ?"

    "Nurse Rayna Marim, Doctor."

"And I am Nurse Aida t'Aral, Doctor."

    "Nurse t'Aral? Isn't that surname ... ?"

She nodded. "Rihannsu. Yes, Doctor ... my father defected from the
Romulan Star Empire and I was born a citizen of the Federation."

"Interesting! Well, I guess I'm checking in, as it were ... let me see
what we have. Oh, by the way ... Ai and Ray?"

"That's what we call one another for short. It rhymes. We've been best
friends since the Academy."

    "Of course."

Mahler set his bag down and proceeded to do a brief inspection of the
area. "All seems to be in top shape. And now I believe I have to report to the
Bridge. Carry on, I'll be back and see you later."

And with that he was gone, out of Sickbay and into the Turbolift.

Marim and t'Aral exchanged silent glances. They knew this wasn't an
ordinary man.

And they each wanted him like crazy, too.
