"Check Up"
Sussanna Jameson and Melanie Redgrave
Sighing, Anna swung her feet to the floor and wandered out into the main Sick
Bay. "Okay, who's next?"
Looking up from the padd she'd been reading, Melanie looked around the room and
then smiled up at the doctor. "I think that would be me." She replied as she
stood and walked over to Anna.
"Hey there," Anna said, offering her hand. "So, what can we do for you today?"
"I was told that I needed to come in for a proper check up." Melanie told her
as she followed the doctor towards the bio beds. "Plus I'd like to find out
certain things. How far along, whether the wee poppet is ok, stuff like that."
"Pregnant? Wow, this ship's dropping sprogs like nobody's business." Grinning,
Anna took Melanie to a biobed. "Lie down for me. Okay, questions?"
Melanie hopped up onto the bio bed and then laid down. "Do you have anything
that'll help with the morning sickness that seems to last way past morning?"
"Sure thing, what are you taking at the moment?" Anna said as she fiddled with
the controls of the bed.
"Cazook gave me something in a hypo but it wore off rather quickly." Melanie
answered. "I've been eating saltine crackers which seem to help."
"Have you tried tea? My Mum always told me that Camomile was great for morning
sickness. Admittedly that was when she was hinting that she wanted
grandchildren." The scans ticked over as Anna read the results. "You're looking
fine. I can't see any problems."
Relief washed over Melanie's face. "Yes I've tried tea. It helps but doesn't
stop it." Biting her lip she asked, "Is there a chance that Elijah's expose on
deck 13 will hurt the baby?"
"Nope." Switching off the scans, Anna smiled as reassuringly as she could. Her
bluntness covered a little uncertainty but she wasn't about to admit that to a
patient.
Again relief washed over Melanie's face. "Thank heavens."
A tight smile was all Anna offered Melanie. "Any other questions?"
"How far? And is it took soon to pin point a due date and when can we come in
to hear the heart beat and for an ultrascan?" Melanie rattled off quickly.
"Wow, hold on there, let's take each of those in turn. Your five and half
weeks. Heartbeat and ultrascan, it's a little too early for that. We'll keep an
eye on you, do the scan when you're ready. Don't worry, we'll take care of you."
Melanie smiled as she sat up and then hopped down. "Thanks Doctor. First time,
guess I'm a little scared."
Nodding, Anna gave Melanie's hand a squeeze. "It's understandable. Now, all I
need is a small sample of your blood, just for comparison purposes. It's
procedure, I'm afraid," she lied.
"I'm going to be full of bloody holes." Melanie laughed as she pulled up her
sleeve.
Placing a hypospray against Melanie's arm, Anna took enough blood to perform
tests on. She'd been the one to create the initial cure from Elijah's immunity
so she knew what she was looking for. Given that, it was most likely that there
was nothing wrong with the child, but she had to be sure.
"Thanks," she said, smiling as she pocketed the sample. "Now, go put your feet
up and think happy thoughts, you have to come back next week but if there's
anything you need me for, don't hesitate to ask."
"Next week." Melanie repeated for her own benefit. She'd have to see if she
could get Elijah to come with her. "I'll be here. Thanks again Doctor."
