<USS Avalon> "Cakewalk"

"Cakewalk"

Part 1

By Lieutenant Second Class Elissabeth Marksbury

?I remember you,? Lissi smiled as she shook hands with Agent Payne. ?You were
one of the agents that brought me to Intel the first time.?

?Call me Casey,? he said, grinning. ?And this is J.R. Tabios, my partner. New
partner, actually.?

"I'm Lissi." She shook hands with J.R. and though he smiled, he didn?t speak.
The three climbed into the skimmer with J.R. driving. The streets of San
Francisco rushed by as they made their way towards the bay in the beginning
twilight.

?So, tell me about this girl ? Kaylee. You?ve met her, right??

?Yes. She?s ten years old. Copper colored hair, freckles, adorable smile, and
one of the most disarming personalities I?ve ever encountered. Smart. Her
speech patterns are somewhat crude, but I have a feeling it?s her choice to
talk that way. She said she wanted to join Starfleet, understanding that she
needs some training with her powers. She hasn't learned to control her ability
and reaches for deep thoughts almost unconsciously ? or at least she said she
couldn?t help it. You will definitely need to shield your thoughts around her.
 But she?s a sweet kid.?

?So it's a cakewalk then??

?Should be, but you never know. She could change her mind and it could get
ugly fast. I don?t want to chase a kid over the beach and through these
streets. Especially one that knows them when I don?t.?

?It won?t happen. We?ll set up like this,? Casey said, handing her a PADD.
?These are the coordinates you gave for the meeting.? He turned around in his
seat as far as possible to point. You?ll be waiting here. I?ll be here and
Tabios will be here. This limits her means of escape until you signal an all
clear. Sound good?? he smiled at her.

"Absolutely."

?Great.? He turned back around and she enjoyed the scenery.

They arrived at the shore thirty minutes early and Lissi could see Kaylee
already perched on top of the rock.

?We?re moving,? Casey said. Lissi nodded and set off towards the beach.

?Hi, Lissi,? Kaylee greeted, not even turning around. ?Good. You?re ready to
take me with you. I hoped so,? she said, turning and showing her backpack.
?Wow, a school for telepaths. That?s gotta be better than where I am now.
Let?s go.? Once again, the agile child tumbled to the sand from the top of the
rock.

?And I didn?t even have to say a word,? Lissi smiled as she signaled to the
others it was a go. They all began walking towards the skimmer.

?Oh, sorry. I forget. To me it?s like having a regular conversation.?

?I understand. Come on and I?ll introduce you to J.R. and Casey, some friends
of mine that are giving us a ride.?

?Other agents, you mean. You don?t have to dumb things down, y?know,? Kaylee
said with irritation. ?I can hear your thoughts just as well as if you speak
them. Well, only your surface thoughts. You?re hiding your others.?

?Sorry. I wasn?t trying to ?dumb things down?. I was trying not to be loud
and blunt. Even though the beach is deserted, I try and make it a habit to be
discreet," Lissi explained.

?Oh, I guess I ?? Kaylee came to a sudden stop. They were about forty yards
from the skimmer and the other two agents. Her eyes were round and her mouth
dropped open. "Oh god, oh god, oh god," Kaylee began chanting.

?What is it??

?He's gonna kill me.? She was looking at Tabios.

?What? Kaylee," Lissi lightly shook the girl by the shoulders, but she wasn't
responding.

"Oh god, oh god, he's gonna kill me," was all that she seemed able to say.

Lissi turned to judge the distance between her and the agents, trying to think
up a plan. As soon as her attention was divided, however, Kaylee bolted.

"Kaylee!" Lissi took off sprinting after her, as did Tabios and Payne.

Kaylee was quick and nimble, even running over the sand in the growing
darkness. The distance between them was increasing, though Lissi still had
Kaylee in her vision. However, that all changed when she saw phaser fire
streak past a shoulder from one of the agents behind her.

To be continued...
