<USS Avalon> "Between Friends"

"Between Friends"
Jr. Lt. Lyta Michaelson & Ensign James Henderson

Sitting in one of the local drinking establishments, James wondered what his
life was going to be on the new Avalon. He had the distinct feeling he was
going to be an ensign forever. Never the one in charge but always the one
following orders. He envied Lyta, who at least had been promoted. He didn't
understand it. They had both started at the same time, were assigned to the
Avalon
at the same time. Was he doing something wrong? Did the Captain have
something against him?

Lyta was looking for something to do before they had to board the Avalon so
she made her way to the smoky interior of a bar, Through the smoke and noise
she could see James sitting alone. Wondering what he was up to she made her
way across the crowded room and sat down at his table.

"Hey there James, what's up?" She nodded at the barkeep who sent over a
drink along with some nuts. "You look like you lost your best friend."

Looking at Lyta, James smirked, "What brings you slummin?'"

"I didn't know I was slummin.' What's got you so down?"

Taking a long pull of his drink he looked a Lyta, "I don't know. A little
bit of everything I suppose. I don't think I am ever going to get promoted. I
am
going to be stuck taking orders from everyone, even you. I don't think
Captain Ketchum likes me very much."

It had taken her a long time to get promoted so she knew how James felt.
"Hey, just give it some time. Who knows with all the new crew coming aboard you

will get promoted. I don't think the Captain has anything against you, he just
has a lot on his mind. What with his own son jumping ship."

"I suppose you're right. I wonder what Phillipa is going to do? Rumor had it
that John was the father of her child. That's got to be tough on the
Captain."

Lyta looked at her friend, "I certainly wouldn't want to be in his shoes
when and if they find him. I'm sure his dad isn't going to be very happy or
easy
on him. As for Phillipa, I'm sure she will do just fine. She always manages
to pull through every situation."

Smiling James chuckled, "Can you see our Captain as a Grandpa! Gramps
Ketchum!! That is too funny. I just hope I don't accidentally call him that in
person. I will never get a promotion that way."

"Yeah, it's hard enough to imagine him as a father, let alone a Grandfather.
That would make Admiral Praz a great grandfather. Lordy he must be getting
up there, but he does hide his age well."

Ordering another round of drinks the two friends spent the next few hours
commiserating over everything that had happened in the past few weeks. They
both
hoped the future would be much brighter.
