<USS Avalon> "Beginning of a Long Voyage"

Beginning of a Long Voyage
Elissabeth Marksbury and Alexis Cazook

The shuttle was fully loaded with all of Elissabeth's medical files, reports,
scans and other test results. Also piled in the back was Dr. Cazook's bag as
well as Elissabeth's. They had gotten clearance from Avalon to depart, so with
Cazook sitting in the copilot's seat she let Elissabeth do the driving, hoping
it would take her mind of what was happening.

"Shall we proceed to Earth, Madam Driver?"

"That's the plan," Elissabeth replied quietly. She was leaving Bryce behind to
go traveling with Cazook. She knew the older woman meant well, but... it was a
disruption to her life she was not happy about. The sooner they got to Earth
and she could see James Maturin as well as make some inquiries into her
investigation, the more at ease she would feel.

Receiving the all clears from Avalon as they had allowed them to leave, Lissi
piloted the shuttle effortlessly as they sped away from her home. She sighed
slightly, trying not to let the last several hours weigh upon her.

Alexis looked over at Elissabeth and could see the despair in her eyes. She
didn't know what to say to help ease her pain. "Cmdr. I don't suppose since we
have some time on our hands before we make it to earth, that you could see it
to teach an ole' doc like me how to fly one of these contraptions?"

"You've forgotten?"

With a confused look Alexis looked at Elissabeth, "I've forgotten what?"

"Weren't you taught this in the Academy?"

Alexis started to laugh, "Lord woman do you realize how long ago that was? I
haven't flown one since the Academy. I haven't exactly kept that skill up to
par. Here I thought I had forgotten something important like tea and crumpets."

Elissabeth sighed, really not up for any bonding or banter or friendship. She
wanted to get to Earth and get this over with. But instead, she began talking
Cazook through the basics of shuttle flight.

Listening was one of Alexis' more stronger suits and what wasn't being said
spoke volumes. She could tell that Elissabeth wasn't really interested in
teaching an old fool, or even talking for that matter.

"Cmdr, I think I am going to leave the flying to you. I am going to go back and
check on some materials I brought with me. If something should come up or you
just want to talk you'll know where to find me."

Getting up from her seat, Alexis made her way to the back of the shuttle and
started sorting through her supplies, leaving Elissabeth to her own thoughts.

And what thoughts they were, really. Elissabeth was surprised and ashamed to
realize how many notions of self-pity were stewing around in her head. And, of
course, not to mention the dull ache behind her eyes beginning again. She
missed Bryce and hated more than anything being away from him with things being
a little unsteady between them. What if he found someone else? Someone who
wasn't so stubborn and who was less likely to push him away.

A tear trickled down her cheek. This was going to be a long, long trip.
