Lt. Patrick McEntire waited for his roommate's final
release from the infirmary, having only just been
released himself. He almost laughed as Ensign Joshua
Garrity shot out of there, his long strides carrying
him as quickly as he possibly could away from there
without actually running.
"Wait up," Mac called, running to catch up.
Josh gave the slightest shake of his head. "We're
going to be late" he answered almost inaudibly.
"No we won't. Relax." He could see the stress and
nervousness in his friend's expression and frowned.
Josh didn't like change, and the last month since the
Santa Ana had been destroyed had been very difficult
for him. He'd only just begun to come out of his shell
before the ship was destroyed, and being one of only a
handful of survivors out of a contingent of 700 didn't
make it any easier. He'd been one of the "lucky ones"
before. Somehow, they were never really all that
lucky.
Still, at least some of the luck had held out. They'd
been reassigned together to a new ship, the Avalon,
and she was docked right here. All they had to do was
be medically released and pick up the new provisions
they'd been issued, everything they owned having been
destroyed with the Santa Ana. That done, they were
ready to go back home to the stars again.
