"The Ensign and The Commander"

Ensign Michael Bailey & Commander Skyler
Skyler had reported back on the Avalon and was going over the crew
roster. It appeared that everyone was aboard, but there was a name
that was new to her. It was a new security person, by the name of
Ensign Michael Bailey. Â She wondered why they needed a new security
officer but she just did as she was told. She would wait until he
reported in.
Back on the station, Cadet Michael Bailey stood alone outside the
space dock, without rank, wondering what was in store for him as he
waited for a command officer from the Avalon to approve his transfer
and boarding request. He was rather nervous, as this was his first
assignment since graduating from the academy. He never imagined that
he would be assigned to such a magnificent ship. He looked over the
Avalon, through the station windows and was amazed at the size and
the sheer power that must be flowing through her engines, not to
mention the crew that it took to run such a ship.
Skyler was getting impatient. She was not one for waiting on new
crew members, especially ones straight out of the academy. She would
treat this Ensign exactly as she treated the rest of the crew. Fair
and impartially. Although she had to think about the impartial part
when it came to Lieutenant Commander Sierra. She couldn't be
impartial when it came to him, and she was definitely having trouble
being patient. Perhaps she would set up an appointment with the
counselor.
As she was contemplating this she received a message that there was a
Cadet Bailey waiting for approval to board the Avalon. She told the
Officer of the Day to grant this Cadet permission to board the ship
and to have him report to her in her office on Deck One.
She waited patiently while Cadet Bailey boarded the ship, she reread
the crew manifest and it did say Ensign Bailey. Something was wrong
somewhere, and she would get to the bottom of things before the ship
took off. She couldn't have her crew all screwed up, especially with
this new mission
Cadet Bailey boarded the Avalon, still amazed at its size even from
the inside it was still a very large ship. He searched for Commander
Skyler's office by following the keypads on the terminal walls until
he found her office. He hesitates momentarily to straighten his
uniform, making sure everything was in its proper place. He then
pressed his thumb against the keypad to her office and then waited
patiently at attention.
  Â
Skyler heard the buzzer. "Enter."Â Cadet Bailey entered her office
and stepped to the front of her desk and stood at attention. "Cadet
Michael Bailey, reporting for duty as ordered"
"At ease Cadet."
"Yes ma'am
Skyler checked her manifest again. "Are you sure you aren't an
Ensign? Because that is what is says on my manifest of new
crew members. Â Ensign Michael Bailey. Can you explain that?"
Cadet Bailey nervously looked to the Commander. "I was told by my
commanding officer that I would be receiving a promotion upon my
transfer to the Avalon ma'am."
"Let me see if I have this right. You were told that once you were
aboard the Avalon you would be promoted to the rank of Ensign. That
is highly unusual. Let me see your transfer orders and perhaps that
will straighten things out."
Bailey pulled his transfer orders out of his back pocket. He had just
arrived from the academy the day before and discovered he was already
assigned to a vessel. He handed the transfer orders to Skyler
and then remained at ease until told otherwise.
Skyler took the orders and read through them as the new cadet stood
at ease in front of her.
"Well, according to this you just graduated from the academy and you
managed to get assigned to the Avalon. You must know people in high
places. Anyway, it does say that you are to be promoted to the rank
of Ensign upon your arrival to the ship; therefore it is my honor to
promote you to the rank of Ensign with all the rights and privileges
thereto. Congratulations Ensign."
"Thank you Commander."
Skyler got a pip out of her desk and pinned it on his collar. â??It
also says you will be working in security, correct?"
"Yes, Ma'am"
"Then after you find your quarters on deck 6 you will need to report
to Lieutenant Commander Sierra, who is in charge of security. He can
be rough around the edges but if you do your job the way you are
supposed to you should be fine."
   Â
"Aye Ma'am."
Skyler thought to herself that someone was going to have to work on
loosening this young man up. He seemed a little stiff, but after some
time on board the Avalon, she was sure he would loosen up, or die
trying.
"Welcome aboard the Avalon and I hope you enjoy your first assignment
aboard her and if you have any questions please feel free to ask
Lieutenant Commander Sierra or come and ask me."
"You can count on that Commander."
"I am, I don't like slackers or any other person who doesn't do their
job. Otherwise you will fit in just fine with the rest of us. You are
dismissed. You can find your quarters on deck 6, then report in to
Lieutenant Commander Sierra. You will most likely find him in
security or on the bridge."
Ensign Bailey turned sharply on his heels and left Skyler's office
and went off in search of his quarters and then would start to look
for Lieutenant Commander Sierra. What he had seen so far he was
impressed with. He only hoped that he could live up to the
expectations of the Captain and the XO. He could only do his best and
hope that that was enough.
