Meeting the Captain
by Ensign Manson & Captain Ketchum
Anthony made his way to the bridge, only to be re-directed to deck 2, where the
captain?s ready room was. It was a small twist to what he expected. Instead of
predominantly- and also as usual- on deck one, it happened to be on deck two.
He walked out of the bridge, not really taking a good look at it; or the
difference in it, and traversed to deck two.
He wasn?t too sure, but he took a right and was correct as he saw the captain?s
room. Touching the familiar door alert, he heard the captain.
"You may enter." Anthony walked in, seeing the captain at his table reviewing
something only meant for his eyes.
"Ensign Anthony Manson, sir, transferring from the Blackwell." Anthony informed
politely. He stood with his hands back, but was relaxed. It wasn?t any sign of
disrespect of be in a "relaxed" state, but it sure beat being like a new
officer fresh from the academy. His poise was not of insults, but one of those
polite hellos. It also happened that he had instant nervousness creeping up.
"Welcome aboard, Ensign", Keith glanced up quickly, but continued to work at
the pile of PADDs, "We're glad to have you aboard; I hope you can handle these
PADDs from the various departments." Keith offered several of them to the
Ensign. "I hope I don't overwhelm you as Ops Officer, too early on, but you've
done the job for some time, so you'll be a whiz. And with Skyler gone recently,
I've been boondoggled with all this work. Even the Informations Group can't
keep up."
"Oh..." Anthony took some of the PADDs, "I?ll get right on it Captain."
"Very good", Ketchum said as he tried not to drown himself in the paper work,
"I did have one question; I do rely on my Ops Officer quite a bit when I?m on
the bridge; are you prepared to offer suggestions quickly when needed, even
speaking up when not asked if an idea arises?"
Speaking Up? Anthony hadn?t thought of that. He did very little of that nature
on the Blackwell. Then again, the Blackwell was a hospital ship not expected to
go into anything hostile. But this ship was, and it meant that Anthony would
have to redo the habit of working at Ops a little. But speaking up was
something that completely caught him of guard. So he said, "If the situation
calls for it; I believe I can, sir." A partial truth Anthony right now was
hoping that would not come true. Something told him immediately that it would.
Keith nodded listening to his answer, "Well, I hope you enjoy your stay on the
Avalon, dismissed, Ensign", as Keith returned to his work. Before the Ensign
left, "Oh, and Ensign, welcome aboard."
Anthony smiled a small one, but left quickly.
