<USS Avalon> Avalon Log 041005--Invitations

Since becoming commander of Deep Space Nine due to the Emissary's absence
(for she could not bring herself to believe he was truly gone), Kira Nerys
often mourned the fact that she suddenly developed a lot of 'friends', friends
who would call and ask for favors then disappear the moment they got what they
wanted or who would stomp away if she turned them down. So when the call
came on her personal comm line, she cringed. Nobody called her on that line
at
that time of day unless they wanted something. She was therefore
understandably surprised when she opened the line and saw Vilya's smiling face.
"Vilya! What a lovely surprise! I was hoping the Prophets would send
me a ray of sunshine today," she said brightly.
"How sweet of you, Nerys, thank you. How are you?" Vilya asked.
"I always thought Benjamin had a lot more to do than I knew about. Now
I know for sure," Kira replied dryly. "But enough about that. Look at you!
I see Starfleet agrees with you."
"It does," Vilya agreed. "In fact, I've finally been reassigned to a
ship."
"Well, I still wish you were stationed here but a ship assignment is
what you've always wanted. When do you ship out? Maybe I'll get lucky and
you'll be scheduled to stop here," Kira said.
"I don't know the date but there's something I want to do before then
and I need your help to do it." Vilya told her.
"And what's that?" Kira asked carefully as she saw and heard mischief in
the young woman she'd watched grow up.
Vilya reached backward and drew a young Human man into viewer range.
Not bad looking, Kira thought, nice eyes. Nice smile, too, she added as the
young man offered her one by way of greeting.
"Nerys, this is Ming. We're getting married and we'd like for you to be
there," Vilya told her.

Vilya grinned at the look of surprise on Kira's face. She waited until
her friend stopped choking on the tea she'd been sipping to continue. "We
don't want to wait until the ship gets back and..."
"You're going to elope?!" Kira asked.
"No, ma'am, not quite. It would be eloping if we were running off and
not telling anyone. My brother is here and he's willing to marry us but we
thought someone Vilya cares about ought to be there, so to speak," Ming
replied.
"You mean right now? Does your mother know about this, Vilya?" Kira
asked,
"No but, to be fair, Ming's parents don't know either. Please, Nerys,"
Vilya said softly, "don't say no. It would mean so much to me and you look
like you could use a happy break."
Kira shook her head and then smiled. "As if I could refuse my fellow
redhead anything. I just know I'm going to cry, though."
Vilya tapped the comm console to allow Kira a wider view of her
apartment. She was then able to see that both Vilya and Ming were dressed
quite
formally. She could also see an older Human man there, who had to be the
brother
Ming spoke of, who was wearing what looked to be religious garb.
"I wish you had warned me. You deserve better than this at your
wedding. I'm a mess," Kira stated with a grimace as she waved to indicate her
uniform.
The older man flashed her a smile that matched Ming's. "Reverend Daniel
Kabuki, ma'am, and if you're a mess, then it's a lovely mess. Besides, God
knows the beauty inside so you just sit right where you are and I thank you
for joining us."
