<USS Avalon> <Avalon> Catching Up Part One

Catching Up Part One
It will take just over a full solar day to catch up to the Avalon at the Zeta
Retucli VII Station using the Defiantâ??s maximum warp.

Karg and Kira get to have one "normal" day to get to know each other better.
"Tell me about your family Karg."
"Father is Commander Kâ??Ehloch late of the Tiger's Paw. I heard he was the
best tactician in the fleet but not from him. After a distinguished career he
had
the opportunity to go to Earth as a Military Attaché and that is when he met
mother. She is Sara Ah oh no ma of the Burning Arrow clan of the Diné - that's
the word in our language. Navajo is a Spanish word for knife wielder. Mother
is a home maker."

"There are four children. Kâ??Ehneth is now a major on the Dragon Claw then Kâ??
Ehleyr, you've heard of her, then me and the youngest is an adopted brother,
Bock Rual who is part Klingon and part Romulan."
"Did you go to Star Fleet Academy?"
"No, Kâ??Ehneth and I graduated from the Klingon Warrior Academy."
"How did you do?" Karg holds up three fingers. "Third? You were third in your
class" How many students?"
"272 graduating, sometimes I feel like I had to fight them all."
"Why?"

"Racial prejudice, they used to call me â??half bloodâ??. Some of them would
argue that we didn't belong there because only Klingons could attend the
academy."
This memory is making Karg very pensive and sad. Seeing this Nerys asks, "Why
did you need to have so many fights?"
Karg thinks for a moment, "They used words to try to dominate me. They wanted
me to feel less than a person just to make themselves feel superior. Ignoring
them would not make the problem go away but would actually exacerbate it
since they would assume that I was afraid of them. I used to think of an old
20th
century song by a singer named Kenny Rogers - â??Sometimes you have to fight
when you're a manâ??. Somehow, father found out and called us at the school. He
said we must never let them challenge us when they were in a group but we must
seek them out one at a time. We had never done them any harm and still they
hated us. It made me very angry and to the ones I fought I showed no mercy.
Especially the ones who always felt that they had to have a gang at their back.
Kâ??
Ehneth and I both placed first in our hand-to-hand combat courses. We had
motivation and plenty of practice."

"How were you able to let go of all that anger?"
"Mostly through Uncle Joseph. We would have â??Healing Way" sings every summer
when we came home. The Diné use it when someone has been among the Belangana
(the Diné term for outsider) too long. In our case, it helped us to regain a
sense of balance in our life." Karg is a little misty eyed. "We would take long
walks with Uncle Joseph. When we were kids they hated us because we were
Klingon and now they hated us because we weren't enough Klingon. He helped us
to
feel sorry for people who allowed hate to separate them from the joys of the
world."
"He sounds like an amazing man. I would like to meet him."
"You will my love, someday you will."

Nerys knows exactly how Karg is feeling. She has been there many times. Her
loving embrace is all the medicine that Karg needs but still, it is some time
before he is himself again.
