<USS Avalon> "At Long Last A Doctor" Georgia Lewis M.D.

"At Long Last A Doctor"
Dr. Georgia Lewis
2007.03:15

Sitting in her barren quarter's Georgia was relaxing....or trying to relax
while waiting to see if she had indeed passed her tests. Thus making her a
fully qualified Medical Doctor. What could be taking them so long to decide?

Putting aside the magazine she walked over to the replicator and ordered a
glass of tea and some pie. Granted it wasn't her pecan pie but it would do for
now. With pie and drink in hand she maneuvered over to the table and placed
the items down. Just as she was pulling out her chair her comm unit went off.
"Lt. Lewis please report to HQ at once."

Nervously she responded, "On my way." She checked to make sure her hair was
properly made and that her uniform was straightened. God forbid she show up in
a state of disarray. After she was sure she was presentable she left her
quarter's and started the walk across the quad to headquarters. She glanced at
all the cadets beginning the new semester with hopes and dreams of exploring
space to it's furthest reaches. A dream she had a long time ago. Now she was
pursuing another dream. Hopefully this call was the answer to that dream.

Taking in a deep breath of cool air she entered the building that housed
Starfleet Headquarters. It was a glass expanse that in itself was breathtaking.

Making her way up to the office of Dr. Beverly Crusher, now the head of
Starfleet Medical, Georgia walked in and announced her presence.

"Lt. Georgia Lewis reporting as ordered."

The Ensign behind the desk nodded, "Have a seat Lt. Dr. Crusher will be with
you momentarily.

"Thank you Ensign." Georgia turned and took a seat in the first available
seat, noting that there were several others waiting as well. I wonder if they
are all as nervous as I am? If so they are hiding it well.

Several minutes and people entering and exiting Georgia was finally called
into Dr. Crusher's office. Again she stood at attention and announced her
presence. "Lt. Lewis reporting as ordered ma'am."

Crusher smiled. "Have a seat Lt. I'm sure you are curious as to why I have
called you here?"

"Well Ma'am. I must admit I am. If it was just my test scores I would expect
that they could've been sent by an Ensign or some other way. So, yes I am
curious." She sat down, still at attention in the chair in front of the huge
oak desk.

Looking at a PADD in front of her Dr. Crusher finally looked up. "It appears
that you have done quite well in all your classes. You seem to have acquired
a great deal of knowledge in your tours of duty. All your instructors have
told me nothing but good things about you Lt. Now I want to hear from you why
you wanted to go through all this extra training to become a Doctor?"

Shifting in her seat a bit, Georgia wondered when this question would arise
and here it was. "Actually Ma'am, in my own way I have always wanted to be a
doctor. Even before joining Starfleet. I would assist my husband Henry who was
the local doctor. That is where I gained most of my knowledge. Some people
might call it backwoods or some other name. However at the time if nature
could cure things Henry would use that instead of medication people couldn't
afford. He really was my inspiration. When he died I suppose my dream died as
well."

Looking up she could see that Dr. Crusher was listening intently. "Please
don't stop. This is all very interesting. None of this is in your file."

"No I don't suppose it would be. I never thought to mention it. I didn't see
what relevance it had at the time. After a good friend of ours passed away
Henry and I took on the responsibility of raising their daughter. I believe you
may know her as Captain Skyler. I continued to raise her even after Henry
died. I joined Starfleet and began my career as a nurse and wherever Skyler
went I went. We had a special bond, that to this day exists. She and I have
been through our ups and downs but we have always remained family."

Pausing Georgia looked over to the replicator. "Would it be all right with
you ma'am if I were to get a glass of water? My throat is feeling a tad dry."

"Not a problem Lt." Getting up from her desk Dr. Crusher walked over to the
replicator and ordered two glasses of water. Returning back to her desk, she
handed one to Georgia and then sat down. "Please continue."

Taking a sip of water Georgia let the cool water run down her parched
throat. "Now where was I? Oh yes, well when the Avalon had to be abandoned
again
she had to remain behind to get the crew together and I decided that this would

be the perfect opportunity for me to finally finish my dream and become a
doctor. So that is how I ended here at this time in my life."

"That is very interesting Georgia. You don't mind if I call you Georgia do
you? After all we are both Doctor's." She smiled when she made the final
comment and waited for Georgia's reaction.

"Did you say "Doctor?"

"Yes I did. Dr. Georgia Lewis M.D. Sounds good doesn't it?"

Georgia was at a loss for words. She had passed after all her hard work. She
had improved her speech, although she did slip from time to time, she was
now a full fledged Doctor. If only Henry could see her now. "Thank you so much
Dr. Crusher. You have no idea how much this means to me. None at all."

"I think I have some idea. Now for your assignment. How would you feel about
returning to the Avalon-C and serving aboard her?"

Now Georgia was really at a loss for words. To be back with Skyler and even
Ketchum. It was a dream come true. "I would be honored to serve aboard the
Avalon Ma'am. She is my home away from home. Thank you."

"Then so be it. Dr. Georgia Lewis you are hereby assigned to serve aboard
the USS Avalon-C. You will depart to join the crew once they have returned. So
until that time you may consider yourself on shore leave. Oh and
congratulations on a job well done. You might want to stop at the
quartermaster's and pick
up a new uniform more conducive to your position."

Standing with a big smile on her face Georgia nodded. "Yes Ma'am and thank
you. For everything."
With a new spring in her step Georgia turned and left the office and made
her way to pick up her new uniform and begin a new adventure.
