<USS Avalon> "Assignment"

"Assignment"
By Lieutenant Second Class Elissabeth Marksbury

Mordecai Pew sat at his desk analyzing the new problems laid before him.
Exasperated didn't even begin to describe his frame of mind. He had made some
calls and there were people looking forward to meeting this kid. Pew only
hoped she was gonna show.

He ran an aged hand over his close cropped silver hair, rubbing his
frustrations out. He thought back to the decisions he made concerning Maturin
and Marksbury. Pew had thought them right at the time, but apparently not.
Maturin should not have been her contact. He had placed too much faith in the
boy's ability to remain unbiased. Of course he had also been confident in
Brookman's work... But if I really were confident in Brookman's work, I
wouldn't have assigned Maturin to be the one to watch for any changes.

Pew stood and paced behind his desk. Circularly blaming himself wasn't going
to solve anything. He was hoping to have reached some sort of conclusion
before he spoke to Marksbury again, but it wasn't going to happen right now.
And he needed her on the job with the kid.

He told his Yeoman to summon her to his office.

Lissi had check into temporary quarters after leaving Pew's office. She felt
better, but now the heavy sensation of her duplicitness was replaced with a
sickening sensation of dread. She had no idea what the consequences of her
actions would be, but was glad to have done the right thing. She hadn't
mentioned Skyler in all this and was hoping that she'd go rather unnoticed.
Lissi didn't want to lose her too.

She had just decided to go and see Maturin and let him know what she had done
when she was summoned to Admiral Pew's office. Already? she thought. She went
immediately there.

The Admiral was standing, not sitting, behind his desk. Stepping inside the
room, she brought herself to full attention and gave her reporting statement.
The Admiral did not release her from attention.

"You will go with the operatives to retrieve this child you spoke of. I can't
take the chance of her running if you aren't there. Arrangements have been
made for her and will be made with her family.

"You will remain in eyesight of my operatives at all times and you will return
here immediately upon completion of your mission. You meet Agents Tabios and
Payne at seventeen hundred hours. Any additional information is in here." He
handed her a PADD. "Do you have any questions, Ms. Marksbury?"

"No, sir."

"You are dismissed."

Marksbury left Pew's office feeling adequately put in her place. She really
hoped Kaylee hadn't changed her mind about joining up with the 'Fleet, because
like it or not, she was coming with them. She read over the PADD about where
Kaylee was to be schooled. Not so bad, she thought. And she couldn't help but
smile when she read that after an initial training period, Kaylee would be
allowed to contact her. You're tough, Admiral, but you have a good heart. She
wasn't going to disappoint him again.
