"Apology"
By Lieutenant Second Class Elissabeth Marksbury
After pulling herself together, Lissi went to see Laura. She knew how
important it was that she apologised. Not just for her own conscious, but for
James' sake as well. Though she wasn't afraid of losing Maturin's friendship -
she knew they were too close for that to happen - she was afraid of losing his
respect. And it seemed she was already headed down that road.
Laura smiled at her when she opened the door. It was a genuine smile too.
Lissi appreciated it. "Lissi," she said with warmth, "Or should I call you
Elissabeth? This is a nice surprise."
Lissi was almost startled at such a warm reception. Especially when James was
so angry with her. "Lissi is just fine. Could we talk for a minute or two?"
"Of course, come in."
The room was a bit on the messy side. Laura obviously wasn't the neat freak
that Lissi was. But it did feel kinda homey. She had pictures everywhere of
family and friends. Laura was photogenic as well, apparently. She looked as
though she could've been a model, especially since could look as nice in jeans
and a camisole top as she did in her evening gown.
"Could I get you something to drink? Please, have a seat. Don't mind the
mess. I was packing a few things for a quick trip home."
"No thank you." Sitting on the edge of a chair, Lissi told her, "I just came
by to thank you for what you did last night. You don't know me and you were so
nice to me. Even after I ruined your date. And I'm so sorry for that." Lissi
looked her in the eyes, hoping that she understood the sincerity in her words.
"Maybe I didn't know you, but James does. He talks about you all the time. In
fact, I think he's in love with you - not that he's ever said as much. Don't
worry - I know that the two of you are just friends and I'll accept that. My
point was that he truly cares about you and that makes me care."
"You've been...more than understanding, Laura. Thank you."
Laura smiled in response. "I'd kind of like us to become friends too, if
that's possible."
"Of course. I'd like that. And know that James likes you a lot. He's
very...angry with me right now over the fact that he couldn't pay as much
attention to you last night."
"He'll get over," she winked. "I'm not upset. There's always next time. And
I don't mean to pry or stick my nose in where it doesn't belong, Lissi, but how
I saw you last night isn't at all what James described to me. So either he's
looking at you with rose-coloured glasses or something is really bothering you.
If you want someone to talk to...someone else, I mean, I'm here. I've been
told I'm a good listener, though not so great at advice. I would've told you
to take a vacation and do some thinking." She laughed.
Lissi's eyes perked up and she blinked. "Actually, that's not a bad idea," she
replied. "Thanks."
