<USS Avalon> Almost home...

Josh struggled for air that just wouldn't come, in the darkness that seemed to
have swallowed him whole. He stepped tentatively to his left, to find no
footing, and again to the right. He dared not move. He could hear the
screams...smell the rank odor of smoke and burning flesh, death and
decay...they haunted him still..

"sh...it's okay..." a voice he almost remembered, that of a child still
innocent if only barely so...

A distant light seems to flicker then brighten ahead, illuminating the chasm
before him...voices murmer from within, then grow louder...

?Daniel!? a musical voice called out ahead of him. ?Is it you??

He didn?t know how to answer that. Somehow it seems familiar, and yet...

A radiantly beautiful blonde woman with the most crystal clear blue eyes he?d
ever seen was running toward him, stopping just short of the chasm. ?Danny!?
she cried out. ?my Danny?.? Turning to look over he shoulder, she gestured for
someone to join her. ?Thom, look?it?s Danny.?

A calm voice, not cold but nearly so floated toward him. ?He?s early.? The
smile faded, ?Yes, you are, Daniel. You?re not supposed to be here yet.?

Choking back tears, she looked up into his eyes, reaching out as though longing
to touch him with gentle hands. ?You?ve gotten so tall.? She swallowed hard,
forcing a smile. ?Tall and handsome. Just like your father. I'm so sorry,
baby...I wish I could keep you here with me now?I really do.." She reaches out
to him.

The calm male as he stepped into view, wrapping her arms around her, drawing
her hand back. ?He can?t stay.? Sadly, he looked into Joshua?s eyes with eyes
so like Zachary?s there was no doubt who he was. ?I?m sorry, Danny?I?d love to
keep you here with us. Let you rest. I know how tired you must be. But it?s
just not time.? Looking over at Joshua, a hint of tears in his eyes, he
whispered. ?See you soon, son?.?

Josh reaches out, silently pleading as the light vanishes, taking with it all
the air..all the hope...all the almost tangible memory of the time before...

he gasps...struggling...praying for air that just won't come as the darkness
envelopes him again...
