<USS Avalon> A Step Closer

"A Step Closer"
By. Lt. Jg. Melanie Redgrave

It hadn’t been easy getting the weapon out of the gears of the turbo lift,
but thankfully the two boys from engineering were a great help. The weapon was
now safely in an evidence bag in her kit, and Melanie was on her way to
forensics where a very unhappy Skyler was waiting. This wasn’t the first time

that Melanie would have to face a command officer, or security goon who thought

they knew better then she about how to do things, but it would be the first
time she’d have a connection to one. Melanie was never one to mix work and
her
personal life and had always managed to switch back and forth with ease, and
she hoped that she still had that ability, but being able to be an officer in
the lab and then switch into a friend at the local pub was far different
then being your commanding officer’s sister. Not that Skyler wanted her to
be
her sister.

“Hey Mel!” Paul called out as Melanie walked into forensics.

She tried to smile but just couldn’t muster it. “Not now Pauly I have
something to take care of and Commander Skyler is waiting..”

“I know I saw her come in and she doesn’t look to be in the best of
moods.”
Paul said as he fell into step beside Melanie. “But I have something I think
your going to want to know.”

Melanie stopped and turned to looks at the young man. “Make it fast.”

Paul smiled. “I finished looking over the sales recorders for those shoes
and we found another name.” Paul paused long enough to see a spark in
Melanie’s
 eyes. “Lol Kendrick.”

“He’s on my list of people to talk to.” Melanie said as the wheels in her

mind started spinning. She replayed the conversation she had had with mister
Kendrick when he came into the ready room, and then their run in near the turbo
lift one night when she was heading home. ‘Was that his left hand he had
that spanner in?’ She asked herself before finally turning her attention
back to
 Paul.

“Get a warrant to search his quarters for the shoes form, Sierra. I don’t
have the time to play nice anymore.”

Paul smiled as he nodded. “You got it, Mel.”

Melanie stood there and watched as Paul headed off to Commander Sierra’ s
and then turned to see Skyler waiting in one of the back labs. Melanie took a
deep breath and shifted her kit in her hands, and then walked back towards the
lab. She needed to dust the weapon for prints and check for any trace of DNA.
It was long past time to end this case.
