A Doctor?s Note
By Doctor Brookman
Brookman tapped his pen on the console, contemplating what he was going to say
next. His log wasn?t complete, and it had been awhile since he updated it.
Being in Starfleet Medical meant there was always a new challenge, a new
obstacle, to face. Everyday seem to be planned out to the minute, but it didn?t
bother him, he enjoyed his work and in the years of his residence in Starfleet
Medical he found his job to be laid back. Easy and slow at times.
But the recent activities concerning Commander Skyler, and Lieutenant Marksbury
were anything but easy and slow. The regular updates between Doctor Cazook and
him were not as constant as they were suppose to be. And the fact that Cazook
had contacted him concerning memory recovery of his two patients only made him
worry a little more.
Not to mention Maturin?s outburst and his obvious concern for Marksbury. It was
clear to Brookman and no doubt others that the man had strong feelings for her.
Feelings that couldn?t be returned- Brookman assumed. He wasn?t one to pry-
much- but his experience instantly picked up on his emotional distraught.
Brookman shook his head a little and fixed the glasses he had on.
"Computer, resume log."
The computer bleeped in compliance.
"With the current status of Intel?s need to be aware of Lieutenant Marksbury?s
and Commander Skyler?s medical condition, and the lack of updates that is
mandatory for such a case, I believe that it will be necessary to inform the
Chief Medical Officer- a Doctor Felicity Roan- about the current situation. The
U.S.S. Avalon- as far as I was informed- is on her way back to earth in a
matter of a few days. A few things will need to be cleared."
He paused, thinking on his decisions quickly, "I have decided that should the
lack of updates become a serious dilemma, I will request the Intel take
immediate action to investigate the matter of both of the patient?s condition.
Given the fact that my last contact with Doctor Cazook only raised worries of
both of the patient?s memory, I have to assume that the memory procedure is now
a failure and will inform Intel that this may be a security threat.
"But, considering that there have been no communications between me and Cazook,
this is all based on assumption. I do not know what Skyler?s and Marksbury?s
condition are, but- again- I will be taking a closer look when they get back.
Also, I do not believe- after my last communique with Cazook- that all is
alright with Marksbury when I read the report submitted by Maturin and given on
request by Admiral Pew. However, I cannot also say it is not possible that the
condition of Marksbury has stabilized. The communications have become a serious
problem and as a Doctor I am unable to address any concerns that would
otherwise be very difficult for Doctor Cazook.
"On a personal note, I believe that Maturin?s involvement in Marksbury?s case
is a mistake. My last visit with the young man proved problematic and given the
years of experience in the medical field; it was clear that Maturin was under
emotional strain. For that, while I?m no counselor, I advice Intel to take a
closer look on this, most especially Admiral Pew to look into this situation
since he and Maturin are working rather closely on Miss Marksbury?s case."
He thought about another possibility to having Skyler and Marksbury looked on
closer. He didn?t like the spying bit, but he would nevertheless inform Intel
to take action. There was another direct approach to this and aside from asking
Doctor Roan to help, he could ask another person?s help that also resided on
the Avalon. "Given the fact that Doctor Cazook is- in some ways- new to this
memory procedure, and therefore would be unable to determine some situations, I
will be asking for not only Doctor Roan?s intervention, but also of a Counselor
McKinsely. I?m know the Avalon?s senior staff by profile, and after some time,
I?ve been considering that Counselor McKinsely and Doctor Roan?s help may
become invaluable.
"Naturally, on this assumption that everything is going wrong with Skyler?s and
Marksbury?s memory, I will be issuing orders to Cazook as soon as she arrives.
However, I will not be ordering Doctor Roan?s or Counselor Mckinsely?s
intervention. This will be a strictly a volunteer duty, considering how
classified this is; it is important I make my decisions wisely. The last we
need is more problems on the plate when they are already overflowing."
He took a breath, that part of his work was done. That piece of his life stored
safely as he looked a small picture placed at the right side of the table, "on
the lighter stuff, my daughter will be getting married this month. I can?t
believe she?s all grown up. A harmonious blend of my wife and myself, I must
admit," he chucked lightly, "my Cassandra will no longer be Cassandra Brookman
but Mrs. Cassandra Konrath. My how time flies."
He put the picture down, "I?ve also been considering resigning my commission.
It?s a rather drastic decision to say the least. I?ve always worked in
Starfleet Medical, being lucky to stay on earth for the better half of my life.
The days are passing quicker than I realized when I was thirty and actually had
enough energy to see the day through. Working here for the last forty years has
been an experience I couldn?t trade for anything. Well, work wise, but for my
wife, I?d trade everything for her.
"Which has prompted my decision to retire. We aren?t getting any younger, and
our days are being counted- sadly, vexed by the limitations of our bodies now,"
he laughed a the comment, "it?d be really nice to resign. Do I have a
particular date I would like to resign? No, honestly, I feel as if I could do
more. As I said, it?s only been a recent thought. I suspect within three
months, I will retire of the field and let the younger, eager, and ambitious
doctors take over. Don?t know what they?ll do to this place, but it would be in
good hands."
The computer chimed in, "the time is eighteen hundred hours."
"Ah, computer, end log." Brookman tapped his stomach, feeling hungry he got up
and headed for the doors.
