Not a book as such, but I recommend the tutorials at w3schools.com e.g.
http://www.w3schools.com/xml/default.asp. (And they do feature
"printer-friendly" pages, so you can always print them and make your own
"book" for reading on the train or wherever!) 

Also, they contain a few interactive examples where you can edit snippets of
XML to see what effect your changes have. 

The tutorials are very short and straight to the point, which might or might
not suit your needs. See what you think...
