Well I guess we don't. Most recent incarnations of such references to 
Australian dollars I have seen, have used AU$. I have seen AUD _without_ a 
$ symbol, as a prefix to a dollar value. In my previous message, I just 
carried over the original email reference :-)

The most common prefix seems to be AU$"
