atw: image file formats - suggestions wanted

Hi all - I'm looking to optimize clarity but I also want to keep the
resulting PDF's file size as small as possible.

Clarity is the main issue, though.

I've rejected JPG in favour of BMP. PNG seems to have the same
resolution as BMP, though the file size is much smaller.

Can anyone suggest an alternative to BMP, and that gives greater
clarity?
