atw: crime stats

A quick trip to the bureau of stats shows that
Arnold's views are generally supported by the
statistics for Australia.

Warren, I find it a little hard to believe that from
one year to the next, victims of crime would go
through a quantum (that term should provoke some
discussion :)) culture change of not reporting
crimes--though I cannot support my argument other than
through personal experience. I know that I have
reported all offences against me, and other crimes
that I have witnessed. I recall several friends and
relatives doing the same. Despite a generally low
satisfaction in police efforts and the justice (sorry,
"legal") system--with only one arrest and he got
off--I don't recall anyone telling me they had chosen
not to report a crime. The police also seem more
intent on construing comments as complaints against
them, which then seem to get more assiduous
investigations than the crimes.

From the ABS, the only crime to show an increase from
2003 to 2004 was abductions. The other six reported
categories all had reductions averaging around 10%

The results for 2002-2003 were similar.

I am perplexed about whether you think the police
should attend a robbery ahead of a murder. I would've
thought your proof would be a lay down misere.

I agree that there should be fewer police assigned to
revenue raising and more emphasis on crime solving. I
get aggravated when friends lose bikes worth several
thousand dollars and the police do nothing about it.
Then they stop cyclists for riding no hands, or for
going through near-empty malls after the shops close.

I think it boils down more to what we as a society
*accept* rather than what we want. And I think the
best way to get away with any crime is to be wealthy
and buy expensive lawyers--which is why I changed my
description from justice system to legal system.

Cheers,
Terry
